It's unusually quiet here though. Where are all the people who were angry about LMDE being "a sleeping distro"?

Only down side for me : absence of mint menu but then again don't think it will be long till that's fixed

Is it absent in MATE or in Gnome 3?

Sorry boys and girls, I couldn't care less. All I am waiting for is LMDE KDM without any of those artificial Desktops like Gnome (I hope, they retire back to their origins in the vaults of the Swiss banks) Mates and what else has been introduced lately. I have now installed Sabayon KDE and are very impressed with what I experienced with them on the second day. It originates from Italy and true, everything is as elegant as a Ferrari.

Maybe they 've changed their repositories or they move to other distributions
UP 3 entered incoming in August the 30th. Almost six months since then. That fact is in favor of the people that were calling lmde a "sleeping distro".

I hope Clem will release a new iso too -but i am not very optimistic about that.

Monsta i'm clueless about mate or gnome i only tested on xfce and cinnamon witch seem to work perfect for me and yes sadly both without mintmenu (hope will get fixed soon, the software manager is sorely missed )

Ah, I've read about that in the feedback thread.

Not as fearful as I thought. IIRC, mintMenu has been somewhat adjusted to use MATE's libraries instead of Gnome's (Gnome 2, I mean). MintMenu is not "native" to XFCE, and looks like the applet that enabled it to appear on XFCE panel should be also adjusted a little.

As for Cinnamon, it has its own menu with look & feel resembling the original one. You can't get the "classic" mintMenu to work there.

I'd heard UP4 was coming and my Update Manager assures me my box is pointed at 'Incoming,' but I've had no updates since well before you posted this Can you advise on when UP4 will be offered to the rest of us?

Okay, I also have not been able to get any updates over the past two weeks (incoming) but not because they were unavailable but because MintUpdate can't connect to the update server (Main server) or when it does, the download speed is only around 100kB instead of the usual 750 KB to 1.5 MB speed. I managed to install UP4 (Incoming) but getting any later updates is like pulling teeth.

Now UP4 is officially out and I've switched my "sources.list" back to latest as per http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1949

Now MintUpdate is telling me this:

Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I know the "sources.list" is right and this is about the same thing that's been happening when I had the sources set to "incoming" over the past two weeks--except that at least I could connect to the server. Attempting to use any of the mirrors results in either no updates at all or no response whatsoever.

As a comparison, I've been updating Linux Mint 12 without a problem (Main server) with the usual fast download speeds. No slow down or "Failed to connect" problems. I know the "Main server" for LMDE is different than LM 12 but it's just to show that there's nothing wrong with my broadband connection.

Just wanted to throw this out to see if anyone else is seeing the same thing for "Latest" and UP 4. I've actually seen others complain about poor update server performance for LMDE updates(incoming) over the past couple of weeks in various threads in the LMDE forum so I know I'm not the only one

Same here. I can't upgrade either. But upgrades have always been a problem on LMDE.

I've gotten used to XFCE, and want to stay with a distro that uses it. I've been testing out Xubuntu 12.04 b2 for the past week and it works great. My problematic Broadcom wifi works OOB, and updates don't give me a problem.

I'm at the point where I just want something that works without a hassle. I think I may be saying goodbye to LMDE and installing Xubuntu...

the servers are under heavy load (and probably some of them are still syncing), i had to try 4 or 5 times to have a clean update earlier this afternoon. now i could do a dist-upgrade without errors but took me looong minutes to finish a task that otherwise would finish in less than 1 min.

Same here. Also, mintUpdate seems to be unable to load update pack info. It freezes for a while when I press the button, and then... nothing happens.
Oh well, I'll need to make backups first anyway. Discretion is the better part of valor, as they say.

Server problems

We are aware of the server problem and we are currently working on it.

The server is up but it cannot satisfy the huge amount of traffic at the moment. It can achieve 1Gbps. At the moment, a few people are downloading the updates very fast while many others are facing timeouts and errors.

We are currently trying to reduce the maximum speed available per connection, to ensure more people can connect to the server at the same time.

Workarounds

If you can postpone your update to later on today or even tomorrow, you’re likely to skip the traffic and to enjoy faster speeds.

Alternatively, you can point your APT sources to a mirror.

To find a mirror near you, visit http://www.linuxmint.com/mirrors.php and scroll down to the “Mirrored Debian Latest repositories” section.

Choose a mirror, open its URL in your browser and look at its “update-pack-info.txt”, if it shows “version=4″, that means the mirror is up to date and you can replace debian.linuxmint.com with the mirror URL in your /etc/apt/sources.list.

Normally the update process should download first and then install. The packages (also partially downloaded) are stored in /var/cache/apt/.

@all: Hitting update and upgrade all the time won't help the server and lower the load ...

that's one of the problems of mintupdate (and i only realise that a few days ago) it prompts to install and upgrade even if the update process had errors refreshing the repos (something that apt doesn't).
right now you can't really tell if it's safe to reboot or not, it depends of the pkgs that were updated, the ones that were left behind, in what situation exactly is your upgrade process. it can be safe or not.

the best approach is always to upgrade only when you have a clean update.

I have LMDE Xfce installed so why does it want to install Mate? I admittedly have not tried Mate but I nevertheless feel pretty certain that I don't want it.
