Make sure machine is connected to Network. Then when it gives menu for selection Select Linux Mint by arrow key while being there 'Press E' and it will give you a menu to edit.
Something like
Code: Select all
linux    /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=UUID=32939def-1f4a-4134-9b56-bed2319a9216 ro   quiet splash vt.handoff=7

Change it to
Code: Select all
linux    /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=UUID=32939def-1f4a-4134-9b56-bed2319a9216 ro   nosplash  --verbose text nomodeset

then press CTRL+X to boot

I am sorry it should have been
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=UUID=32939def-1f4a-4134-9b56-bed2319a9216 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7
Change it to
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=UUID=32939def-1f4a-4134-9b56-bed2319a9216 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 nomodeset

Hope you tried that way.

Also, try removing all USB devices except mouse and keyboard and boot with LiveDVD

Did you check the md5sum of the ISO file before burning the Mint CD/DVD?

Perhaps you just need to burn or install it again.

Probably you should try another program to put Mint on USB, for example Universal USB Installer

Please edit compatibility mode on the boot menu and add nomodeset at the end (of the next-to-last line if you see multiple lines when editing). Then boot, with Enter or F10.

The error line about modprobe which you posted at the start, contains "10de" (= nvidia) and "1244" (= geforce GTX 550 Ti). So it'll be graphics related.

I tried doing nomodeset on all of the choices error still kept coming up, however i talked to a nvidia staff member and they said the error was not grahpics related, where/how did you get a conclusion that 10de or 1244 mean the nvida gefore GTX 550 Ti? Thanks for the help, hopefully i will be able to use linux for the first time soon!

10de:1244 is the PCI ID of your graphics card. If you ever get a linux system running on your computer, you can confirm this by running lspci -nn in terminal.

help,

I had this same problem yesterday. The resolution was
Code: Select all
nomodeset acpi=off--

Make sure it has the two dashes behind it
That allowed me to boot. I also have the exact same card as you so that is clearly the issue.
