Will 4G be enough?

Post by shengchieh »

I have a 701 eee (the original model) which has 4G flash drive. Will I be able
to install LM 12 LXDE? How much does the language and other "internet"
files use? I.e., I usually install LM w/o the internet as not to let the installer
grab the language pack(s).

Sheng-Chieh

p.s. On this laptop I think I have LM 11 LXDE (not sure - uname is below)

Code: Select all

$ uname -a
Linux rscheng-701 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:36:48 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
I have a few programs (calibre, midori, leafpad [or mousepad - forget hich one I added])
and my files. A df of my system show 82% full.

Code: Select all

$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 3620376 2792104 644364 82% /
none 241720 260 241460 1% /dev
none 249972 0 249972 0% /dev/shm
none 249972 84 249888 1% /var/run
none 249972 0 249972 0% /var/lock

It seems possible.
This is a fresh install of Mint 12 LXDE running in a VBox machine defined with a 4.0 G solid state drive and 512 M ram:

Code: Select all

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 3611360 2484812 943100 73% /
udev 247172 4 247168 1% /dev
tmpfs 101672 956 100716 1% /run
none 5120 0 5120 0% /run/lock
none 254172 112 254060 1% /run/shm
Just give it a try, if it doesn't work you can always go back to Mint 11 LXDE.

The problem is that the 4GB SSD of the 701 Eee is not 4.0GB but actually about 3.7GB and the installer stops if you have a 3.9GB disk or less but works with 4.0GB (4.3GB according with the installer).

See this post: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 60#p547263

Edit: You can go over the installer 4.0GB limitation by connecting a usb pen (or maybe a memory card) to the Eee so that the total disk space is bigger than the limitation.

Thank you for replying. I'll check it out.

Another question:

Does LMDE using XFCE use less disk pace than LM LXDE 12?
You think I should consider that instead?

The Mint XFCE installer doesn't enforce a limit but my Mint XFCE "stock" with UP3 uses 3.6GB (without swap) and if I update to UP4 I need several hundreds of MB of updates so it will not work on the 3.7GB Eee disk.

You can use Mint 12 LXDE or keep Mint 11 LXDE for a little more time, try some tuning to improve performance and save disk space (the pdf is updated): http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=96465

Lubuntu, AntiX and Crunchbang use less disk space than Mint 12 LXDE, about 2GB. AntiX base and Lubuntu minimal install use less than 1.5GB and both have new versions for testing.

You can also try Debian LXDE or a custom Debian install.

I also still have the old eee 701. I'm happy with the performance on Debian Squeeze with LXDE. It's "good enough" for very minimal web browsing, email, etc.

I agree with the previous posts. Debian could fit wonderfully in that machine.
Grab your installer image of the wheezy branch (the same as LMDE) with LXDE desktop from here and give it a try: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekl ... e-CD-1.iso

Of course, you have to add a couple of things (like network-manager and gnome-system-tools, remember to use --no-install-recommends option), but that's pretty easy.
And if you want it to look more "minty", you can grab a couple of packages from LMDE repo to include the gtk and icon themes.

Thank for your feedback. I'm already using #! on my dinosaur desktop, so it
may be first choice on this eee when the tinme comes. Right now, I think
I will stall. The biggest reason for using LM LXDE instead of #! is that LM has
"everything" and you don't need to add any stuff (I'm lazy). But eventually I'll
need to - this laptop is becoming a dinosaur. AntiX looks interesting since it
seems to have "everything" (I think - correct me if wrong).

Too bad LM fluxbox is dead (or close to it).

I have an Acer one which has only 5 gb SSD and im running M11LXDE with no problems and plenty of spare capacity [bulk storage is done onto either pen drives or flash cards]

Fresh out of the oven: http://zoringroup.com/blog/2012/03/19/z ... -released/

What are the minimum system requirements that I need to install Zorin OS?

For the LXDE based versions (Lite):
266 MHz x86 processor
2GB of Hard Drive space
128 MB of system memory (RAM)
Graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution
Sound card

Have you tried zoin 6 lite yet? Last year I tried zorin 4 or 5 (I can't remember which) and
found it alittle buggy. Did it improve?

Here's a video-review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfySE-c1O_Q

It looks pretty polished to me, but the most interesting part is the disk usage. This is what reports a fresh installation in a VBox machine with a 3,7G virtual solid state drive:

Code: Select all

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 3302864 2067364 1067720 66% /
udev 244872 4 244868 1% /dev
tmpfs 101668 740 100928 1% /run
none 5120 0 5120 0% /run/lock
none 254160 0 254160 0% /run/shm
The installer itself ask for at least a 3.6G drive, so it sounds ideal for your machine.

If you have lack of space when updating, you can do a few packages each time, and run apt clean every time to free some disk space before installing the next one.

I'm one of those people that's still clinging to my 701 as well. It's been the toughest electronics gadget I've ever owned!

Getting ready to try Zorin Lite and Crunchbang. Mint 11 Gnome or LXDE works pretty well too.
