[SOLVED] Can I downgrade my Linux Kernel

Postby linktopower on Sun Mar 18, 2012 7:25 pm

I have a little problem with the kernel that came with "Linux mint 12 32 bit" My modem driver will not work with kernel 3.0.0.-12 generic.
The thing I wan to keep using my modem. my modem worked ubuntu 11.04's kernel which was kernel 2.6.38-generic.
The question is Can I downgrade my kernel and go back to an older version?
And how would I do that?

Have you tried upgrading your kernel? In the Update Manager go to Edit > Preferences and click to make level 4 and 5 updates visible (this will only show these updates, and not install them by default unless you specifically checkmark them). There should be a kernel update. Worth a try.

No I haven't tried updating it. I guess I should look at that then.
...
...
But I did get linux-image-2.6.38-10-generic_2.6.38-10.46_i386.deb installed. so I now have two kernels on LM12...
All I'm trying to do know is find out how to choose which kernel I want to use.
The problem is now is how to access the Grub boot menu before Lm12 boots. where I could pick the older kernel.

Hold shift key during boot, that should show you the Grub boot menu on single-boot systems.

By the way, if you need to set the old kernel as default, you can use Startup Manager to do so. (Note that setting an older kernel as default was broken in Mint 11's grub)

And indeed, please add [solved] if you don't need any more help.

By the way, if you want to try more kernels, you can find a lot of versions here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
Version 3.3 has just been released (the v3.3-precise folder).

Yeah I already downloaded Grub customizer. and set my kernel to the new old version so it starts with the old kernel :).
