Did you try booting with a flash drive?

I have one more idea. If you have access to another computer try booting your disk on it. You don't have to worry about the other computer, so long as you don't choose install nothing will be changed.

This will allow us to determine it is your computer and not user error :D

Hi,

I not technical rither, but generally there is a problem with Nvidia graphic cards and so it cannot load graphic driver. Nvidia is proprietary and so the driver is not installed by default.

In linux, drivers are not needed to be installed like we do not win 7. Open source drivers are included in the Linux Kernel.

Another reason for not starting Linux is multiple RAM sticks. Many users remove additional sticks and after installation, they fix it back, which is not so convenient in case of Laptops / netbooks :(

I have seen many users have this problem with LM 12, LM 11.

I hope you are talking about Linux Mint 12 main edition 32 bit. Always try 32 bit edition.

As suggested, try USB media. Not all USB pen drives work properly as LIVE USB :( . You can make LIVE USB from ISO file using unetbootin.

Always check Md5 tag.

since you have tried other Linux Distros, so corrupt ISO issue should be eliminated.

So 2 reasons are Multiple RAM sticks and possible error due to Nvidia driver issue.

There is slim chance that due to motherboard, Linux is not able to boot.

In case of hardware failure like faulty motherboard, even Windows will not boot. In case of faulty RAM, you will soon greeted by Blue Screen of Death. In both cases, you wont be able to run any Linux Distros.

Yea I think it's because of my graphics card. My card is to new and so Linux can't read it. Because someone I talked to said that he had a similar problem. He said that it's the graphics card driver issue. So he told me to ask on the mint fourms for some help so that's why im here :)

Thats the same picture as earlier... Did you actually try the program? Or did you just get the exact same result as before?

Re: I can't install Linux Mint

I to have a problem. I am running a nvidia 540m video card. I could install 10.04 ubuntu but could not get 11.10 to install. I then found Linux Mint and really wanted to try it out. I have the same problem. It starts to load drivers and stop on the video and stays there. Is there anyway around this during the install? maybe even rip out the default nvidia driver and reinstall it after I get mint to install?

If i would take a screen shot it would look like the pic above. stops the same way.

To rip off the driver, you will have to stop X server from running. To do so you will have to leave GUI and drop to CLI by <alt> <ctrl> F1 (or F2) I do not remember exactly). To return back to console, <alt> <ctrl> F7

I have half answer: First is to stop xserver and then uninstall nvidia driver and then install the required driver ,which you will have to search the net. I recommend to open another thread on how to uninstall nvidia default driver in 'softwares and applications' so that you will get better replies, this thread has many replies and so many advanced users may skip this thread.

Then you can stop xserver but there are many ways

CAUTION: By running this command, you will be dropped to command line. So please note down instruction to remove the driver or have another laptop in front of you.

When you reboot, you will be dropped to command line (CLI) and you will have to start GUI Xserver by the commands given below

Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

to start service again

Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

OR

Code: Select all
sudo killall -KILL gdm

to start again simply type

Code: Select all
gdm

OR

Code: Select all
# update-rc.d -f gdm remove

to start again

Code: Select all
# update-rc.d -f gdm start

If you are patient, please wait for 1 -2 months.

on April 26th Ubuntu 12.04 LTS will be released with the then latest kernel. Lets hope this issue is fixed in the latest version having latest kernel.

After a month or so, Linux Mint 13 will be released.

It's weird that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is the only OS that works

This means that older kernel, shipped by default has correct drivers. Each Kernel version handles drivers in a different way. So best is to use Ubuntu 10.04 or better Mint 9 LTS as kernel upgrades are off by default. In case of Ubuntu, you need to be careful while installing updates via update manager. In synaptic there is an often under packages to lock version. But when you are using a older distro, means older software and spending time to upgrade them. Mint 10 has excellent hardware support.

This will make you safe. Even Kernel 3.0.4 has issues with nvidia and had heating issues with some laptops, which was solved in kernel 3.1.

Ubuntu has a lot of drivers installed by default, which increases it's booting time.

Alternatively, try Bodhi Linux. It's based on Ubuntu 10.04 rock solid core and has E17 (a different kind of DE - GUI). It does not have any kind of programs installed and you can install it from online app store or from synaptic, which are updated to latest versions.
