Vbox?

Postby rosswmcgee on Sat Mar 17, 2012 7:43 pm

I have no windows install discs, no iso file to make one because I have used linux for 20 years. It seems I need a windows dvd to run it on Virtual Box. Am I right?

My reason is to get some updates for my wife's I phone. Seems also that apple will not do syncs or much of any thing with our Mint lmde or Mint 9 which my wife uses. Yes we can get along with out all the bells and whistles the Iphone provides. I wish our community was recognized by the big boys but they want to
keep us out.
Does anyone know of a linux compatible smartphone? I use a Blackberry torch 9800 and my wife has an Iphone 4s

I see no free windows iso install disks on the net.

I guess you can tell by this post that I have a lot to learn.

If you don't have windows install discs you are out of luck.

I have a droid phone (Galaxy S) that works pretty good with mint as far as transfering music, files, etc. This was my first droid and I was sold. Since you have been using linux for 20 years, it only seem natural that you would have it on your phone!!!!!! My kindle fire (droid 2.3) also works fine with Linux.

It is sad that the apple overlooked Linux users.

You can download windows 7 straight from their main servers, which will give you 30 days until you need to buy an activation key.

Here is the link

http://www.mytechguide.org/10042/window ... -download/

Downloading the files from Digital River is absolutely legal and free as Microsoft uses them as an official download channel. However, without obtaining a legally obtained product key, you will be able to run Windows 7 installation for 30 days. After 30 days, Windows 7 needs to be activated, or the evaluation grace period be reset. If you already own a key, you can activate the ISO you will download from Digital River.

Thank you for the info. How much is an activation key?

You can be sure our next phones will be linux based. I note there are lots of them now, we just did not realize it when we bought the Iphone.

I see ubuntu plans an ubuntu phone that will be synced with ubuntu.

I have no plans to leave lmde and will upgrade my wife to it when mint 9 support date is over. We also have a computer with debian squeeze running.

I have no knowledge of cloud computing.
Do we have it on lmde if so where?
Why would I want it? Well if it would allow my wifes Iphone to get the updates, I guess via Itunes?
I left Ubuntu for simplist sake and am happy with lmde and debian, would like not to have to use Ubuntu.

IM not sure if cloud is the solution to you. The cloud is where network services such as file storage and server hosting take place. I think the apple icloud is pushing your internet, apps, etc to the internet. Amazon has a similar service for the kindle fire, where you can upload music to their servers and stream it at your leisure. It may take care of your file transfers, but I doubt it would give you the apple updates.

I wonder if this article will help you do a file sync. It looks like a lot of work to get something so simple done..... Debian instructions, but should be very similar for lmde.

http://wiki.debian.org/iPhone

Other than that Im not sure where to point you.

Yes but that requires windows or apple to start with.

Interesting Our mint 9 machine and debian squeeze machine both do well with my blackberry torch 9800. The Iphone on mint 9 and Debian

go right to shotwell and at least pictures could be transfered.

In lmde the BB works but the Iphone gives this msg.

Unable to mount iPhone
Unhandled Lockdown error (-4)

Windows 8. Free. Legit.
M$ is releasing a copy for testing. Might get you out of trouble. Maybe (I would go this way), use it in a Virtual Machine.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... er-preview

There is a developer edition, too.

Google! http://blog.zoomeren.nl/2009/03/24/moun ... libiphone/

Here is some stuff from the website. Looks like you will have to mount it from the command line

Mount the iPhone’s root filesystem including the Media partition (as user)

mkdir /mnt/iPhone (make sure you have write access to the mount mount)
mount.fuse.ifuse –afc2 none /mnt/iPhone/ -s
(The -s options seem to be related to threading/locking issues and is a workaround)

Or mount the iPhone’s Media partition only (as user)
mount.fuse.ifuse none /mnt/iPhone/ -s

Or mount as root
mount mount none -t fuse.ifuse /mnt/iPhone

Unmounting (as user)
fusermount -u /mnt/iPhone

Umounting (as root)
umount /mnt/iPhone

Here is what I do not get. LMDE is supposed to be based on Debian Squeeze. LMDE will not mount the Iphone. Squeeze mounts the Iphone. Mint 9 mounts the
Iphone. These are the three distros currently in use in our home.

In Mint 9 and Debian Squeeze Banshee will work with the Iphone.
