djmenez130,

Good Evening!

When you are referencing the program manager are you talking about the Linux Mint Software Manager? If so, I think there is a current problem/bug that causes it to crash when opening if I remember correctly. I installed Linux Mint KDE 12 when the official (non-RC) ISO came out and had the same problem. I searched the forums and found many others with the same issue.

If this is still the case, you'll have to install packages and/or new software via Synaptic or the Terminal. Using either of those methods I was able to easily get anything necessary for the OS (based on my preferences).

I hope this was helfpul, but if I completely misunderstood what you were asking, please disregard.

Glad to help! I hope you enjoy Linux Mint 12 KDE. I tried it for a few days and enjoyed it more than any other KDE release to date.

I'm pretty sure that bug was fixed (?)

Still, I remember in the early days of the LM 12 KDE release there was a GTK issue with the software manager again. That seems to have disappeared for my system, although I suspect it might have been the upgrade to KDE 4.8 rather than a bugfix. Anyway...

I'd recommend using the terminal/synaptic to manage software as well. The Mint tools are really nice, and very handy for new users, but aptitude/synaptic are just SO much more powerful, and so easy to use that it's worth spending the time... And learning to manage your packages from the terminal is one of the very essential Linux skills...
Arch user now. Inactive for indefinite amount of time.

I just downloaded and installed linuxmint 12 kde dvd, yesterday and the tried the software manager and experienced the same problem... it showing up for 5 seconds and then disappearing. I ran the update manager and it updated many things & says the machine is up to date. I rebooted and tried the software manager again. Still disappears after 5 seconds. Is the problem fixed in the source and not available via update manager?

I have tried two machines, both had this problem and now they are fixed. I installed the KDE 4.8 update through kubuntu backports (described elsewhere here), so maybe that did it. The other thing I installed was KXStudio, which does a lot of stuff. Anyway, it is clearly the case that just some update or system setting change does fix the problem. Sorry I can't be of more specific help.

This may be stupid. but if I run mintinstall with sudo, it doesn't segfault like it (software manager) does from the app launcher menu. I have a core file (142MB) if anyone cares to have a look.

Hi Monacoca,
I had the same problem with the software manager like you are having, in that it appeared and then disappeared. I have found a solution to correcting this. What I did is as follows.
Go to synaptic package manager, and search for MUON software manager, and install.
Open Muon and check for updates, but DO NOT install any updates. Close Muon.
Still in Synaptic, look for Mintinstall and mark for complete removal. Do the same for Mininstall Icons, which is just below Mintinstall. Apply action. Reboot.
Open Synaptic again, search for Muon, and mark for complete removal ALL items relating to Muon ( there are 4 in all), and apply.
Still in Synaptic, search for Mintinstall, and mark for installation, and apply action. (This will also select Mintinstall Icons)
Close Synaptic.
Now select from System from start menu, and select Software Manager, and you should find that the Software manager now stays on screen, and you can use it.
This worked for me and hopefully it will work for you, and if it does, then you will be able to mark yor post as solved, thus allowing other who have the same problem to share this.
One final thing though, if you right click on Software Manager to put it in favourites, then what I found was that the original problem re-occurred, but i can live without it being in favourites, just glad to get it working.
Good luck with this and hope it works for you.
