Recording desktop and windows movies in Linux Mint

Hi all,

I think it would be good to have some recording software for Mintie, since sometimes I want to show what is happening in my OS,

so is there a good open source application which could record my desktop or/and windows easily and fast?

If so, which one(s)?

I've installed with xawtv-tools with sudo, tried to launch record, but there is some tiny problem:

the "open /dev/mixer No such file or directory

OMG? Why?
I did it all with console, maybe that's why?

in gnome3 (and in cinnamon as well) try ctrl+alt+shift+r
it will record your desktop in a webm format that you can find in your home
to finish the session press the same keys again

I have Linux Mint 12, launched Compiz on Gnome Classic with effects,

does that change anything?

In terminal run

aptitude search recordmydesktop

and see if it is available.

Has always been popular, but sometimes buggy back-end+GUI app. If it is listed you can install and try if you want. If you want GUI make sure to install the front-end as well.

The console tells me I can install it, so I did, but when I start by "sudo Recordmydesktop" it won't launch any GUI, only text mode.

Sorry, but I'm new in Linux, Mint 12 with Gnome classic is my first distro.

I wish I could find some GUI based software inside Synaptic, but doubt it.

install gtk-recordmydesktop package for the gui. It will put the recorded video in the ogv format in your home folder.

If you want to record desktop sound too, then you need to route your sound output to the input so it gets recorded.
To enable sound recording I did:
1. Launched PulseAudio Device Chooser from the mintMenu
2. Clicked the tray icon that appeared and chose Volume Control...
3. Selected Input Devices tab
4. Selected Show: Monitors
5. Checked the little green check box next to the "Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo"
6. Inside recordMyDesktop->Advanced->Sound->Device I typed pulse, set the frequency to 44100 and channels to 2

RecordMyDesktop works nice with most compiz effects and even opengl games, movies, etc. Even recording virtualbox works nice (compiz in compiz)

I never got rid of a nasty flickering during compiz cube rotation though. You might need to play with the vsync setting in your graphics driver/compiz/application your running.

P.S. gtk-RecordMyDesktop does not need root priviliges (no need for sudo)

But can ogv format be changed to some more obvious format like avi, mp4 or flv for youtube purposes or does YT know how to deal with it?

To change the format you can use whatever video editing software you like - a quick search revealed a simple tool "Arista Transcoder" available in the Package Manager.
