moonlight (a.k.a. Silverlight support) for LMDE?

Post by robertb »

Is there a way to get a Silverlight plugin for Mozilla? I cannot find a moonlight package in the current version of LMDE.

Thanks.

sudo apt-get install moonlight-plugin-mozilla

Just did it right now, no problems. That said, I am tracking Debian Sid, so I'm not sure if its in testing.
the beauty of linux is that the rabbit hole goes as deep as you want it to go.

Just install the plugin from Moonlight - Download - http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/download.aspx

Or follow the advice from the post above, note it is only available in sid. However the version from the go-mono page is newer.

http://packages.debian.org/search?keywo ... chon=names
Package moonlight-plugin-core

sid (unstable) (web): Free Software clone of Silverlight 1.0 - plugin core components
1.0.1-3+b2: amd64 armel i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
1.0.1-3+b1 [debports]: alpha hppa powerpcspe sh4 sparc64

Package moonlight-plugin-mozilla

sid (unstable) (web): Free Software clone of Silverlight 1.0 - Xulrunner 1.9 plugin
1.0.1-3+b2: amd64 armel i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
1.0.1-3+b1 [debports]: alpha hppa powerpcspe sh4 sparc64

I went looking to install Moonlight today and found out it's not in the current repos for LMDE. What's the proper procedure for installing it now? i don't want to inadvertently install an Ubuntu package and bork my system.

Wait for the repositories to include it
--that is the Linux distributor's recommended method
--any other way, and you deal with any consequences: however most of the time, it would be OK: especially if using Ubuntu, since Mint is mainly and still Ubuntu repository based, you can check in your /etc/apt/sources.list file to see how many Debian vs Ubuntu ( for LMDE version..) repositories are being used to help you decide !

See my post above yours. Moonlight - Download - http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/download.aspx

It is not in Testing and it probably never will be.

Microsoft's Silverlight has been dropped in favor of HTML5 - http://www.hightechnewstoday.com/apr-20 ... news.shtml

Microsoft and Adobe are moving towards HTML5 rather than continuing with their antiquated crappy applications.

That's what I was thinking, DrHu. It's the differences between Ubuntu and Debian packages that make me hesitant to install third party apps I don't know are specifically for Debian or that have dual-standard compatibility like Getlibs.

@craigevil:
I did see that Silverlight is being discontinued, but there are some sites I'd like to use, including one that lets you play with cats online, that insist on Silverlight compatibility. Granted, many sites also insist on a newer version of Silverlight than we have in Moonlight, but I would like to be able to try to use the content. I'll snag the download and see how it goes.

ETA: Dammit. It looks like icat, the site I mentioned above, may need the code that's not available in Moonlight 4 preview. The plugin crashes when I try to visit the site, and Firefox 5 can't play with Moonlight at all.

That's odd. I'm all up to date in LMDE and I'm only running Fx5? I guess I'll have to wait for the next round of updates.

Thanks, but I'll just wait. I can try to run Silverlight in Chromium and I still hate how insistent the Fx devs are about shoving major updates down our throats. If I didn't need to run the Video DownloadHelper extension to get videos from sites other than YouTube I'd just as soon kick Fx to the curb anyway.

I'm getting a little sick and tired of that moonlight thing.
Some sites think it is the right way to send out video with.
But through the years there have been only short periods I could use moonligt.
In Windows it is doing right.

More and more sites in the Netherlands use Silverlight, so we are called to load the thing.
(For Linux 'Moonlight' of course.)

But it does never work in Linux.
When will this problem (for years now) be solved?
It is an enormous annoyance to me and the only real one in Linux.

Silverlight/Moonlight is a dead-end street. HTML5 will replace all Flash, Silverlight, etc. But it is indeed stupefying to see some websites rolling out more and more Silverlight content.
