Firefox Flash Video Downloader add-in adding Malware!

Postby Myself on Sat Mar 24, 2012 8:52 am

The 'Featured' Flash Video Downloader - Youtube Downloader for Firefox which I added to download some helpful Youtube videos I needed is adding Malware.

I started LMDE this morning, after installing Debian 6 on another drive, which resulted in Grub being wiped out on two drives, and all windows I opened in LMDE, after I got reinstalled Grub, went to the top left corner of the screen, one on top of the other, refusing to be dragged to another screen location so I could get to a window underneath. The Minimise, Maximise and Close buttons were also missing. No open application was displayed on the Panel.

I did a system clean and then ran ClamAV which found the following.

After removing it and rebooting everything is back to normal.

I wonder if add-ons and extensions available in other browsers might also host malware. I noticed that Opera, for example, offers many add-ons and extensions that originate in countries noted as frequent sources of malware and viruses.
System 76 Pangolin: 4x Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz, Manjaro 0.8.5 Openbox 64-bit
iMac 21.5: Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz,dual boot Mac OS 10.6.8, LM 14 (Nadia) Xfce 64-bit

It's never too late to learn something new.

I notice that Google have removed these extensions for Chrome and Chromium.
Fact that they own Youtube may also be an influence in this decision.
It a pity as sometimes one needs to have a local copy of a helpful video for when it's not possible to be on-line.
