Ubuntu often fries the mouse.

Postby mzsade on Sat Mar 24, 2012 11:49 pm

Hey guys, No honestly, just google "left-click/right-click/scroll not working in ubuntu". This is the second time in a year that my mouse got burnt, this time it was the left click, right click and scroll worked just fine. I checked on another computer, it's the mouse alright, not a software issue. It was late at night, so i went to Mouse preferences, switched to Left-Hand Mouse and managed to get by. This got me wondering if there was a keyboard shortcut that could be written that allowed toggling between the left and right hand preferences without having to go to the menu..Just chatting about Mint. :)

You might want to try xev and xmodmap: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... ns-274507/
Then assign it as a keyboard shortcut?

For instance, my mouse's default setting (I'm right-handed) is:
Code: Select all
xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3"

If I want to swap the left and right mouse buttons, I use:
Code: Select all
xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1"

Button 2 is the scroll wheel's button. So I leave it at that. Of course YMMV. Use xev to find out which number is assigned to your mouse's buttons.

Thanks a million, the two codes work for me, it was nice of you not to complicate things for me by mentioning the other other buttons and their numbers. :)
Now i went to Keyboard Shortcuts and added custom shortcuts with those two commands, i just can't figure out how to bind the key combinations i want, ctrl+F12 and F12 to them. Took so long to get back because i have searching for ways to do that all this time.

Edit: Oops, messed up something on my keyboard, Shift+c doesn't type anything, can't type the letter c in capitals.

Those combinations might be dead keys. At first, I assigned them to the Ctrl+Shift+Alt+< and Ctrl+Shift+Alt+> keys but those didn't work. But I had success using the following settings:

I bound them to the square brackets and they immediately worked.

LOL, well I only use a regular mouse, but I found a total of 5 triggers. You already know the first three. I may as well post the other two:
Button 4 = mouse wheel forward motion
Button 5 = mouse wheel backward motion

There's also 6 and 7 for the back and forward buttons found on some mice. However the back arrow in web browsers is always the left one so putting back at the right side in left-handed setup is just confusing.

And 8 for the thumb button, i read recently..a mouse designed to engage all of one's digits so that one may fully experience the exquisite delight of carpal pain. :D
