Mint 11 having LOTS of problems lately...

Postby brad1138 on Sun Mar 25, 2012 1:05 pm

After using Ubuntu for 6 years I switched to Mint 11 last summer after not liking the direction Ubuntu was taking (Unity). I have been happy with it. It has a few known bugs that are annoying and that no one seems to care about (biggest one being random panel applets not loading at boot), but aside from that it has been stable. Until recently. From videos not displaying correctly or at all, to Facebook apps (Words with friends in particular) not displaying correctly to complete system lockups, it is becoming fairly unstable.

I run dual boot with Windows 7 and have no problems with it. I have a fairly new/powerful machine, but things seem to take a long time to happen.

I am at the point where I am considering making 7 my default OS so I don't have to deal with all these problems.

Is 11 support getting neglected for 12 or something? Is anyone else having more problems lately in 11? I really don't have the time to investigate why every one of these problems is happening and find a fix or work around for it.

Hi brad 1138, I'm still using Mint 11. I think it's still supported up to this autumn. I can't say that I've experienced any problems recently as you describe. Have you added any programs, enhancements or tweaks?

No, not really. Videos have always played less reliably than in windows. If you pause a YouTube video, the video freezes when you start it back up, but the audio plays. Most all I do on the comp is Surf the web. usually keep about 20 tabs open, and have the browser remember them between sessions.

It could be a flash issue. Facebook apps and YouTube vids are what is causing the most problems and I think they all run on flash.

Hi Brad,
For watching Flash videos I found Google Chrome to be more stable than Firefox in Mint 11. Only Facebook has problems in chrome. Why don't you give Google Chrome a try?

I use both FF and Chrome. I use Chrome much more. It is bothersome that either of the browsers have problems at all. Facebook and YouTube are 2 of the biggest sights on the web, maybe the 2 biggest. Is it to much to ask for a browser that can handle both w/o problems?

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Agree, any browser should be able to handle those two sites. I'm using kernel 2.6.38-13-generic.

I can't watch this video in either FF or Chrome, http://vimeo.com/30362395 Adobe Flash crashes. Occasionally it works in FF. I was trying to show it to a friend yesterday and had to boot into W7 to do it.... This is the case with most videos that aren't hosted by Youtube.

I found that if I disable flash in Chrome Pluggins, the above video plays fine but then other apps (some online radio stations) won't work. they say Flash isn't installed. This is really getting pathetic.
