Would anyone pay to use a fast mirror to download Linux ISOs

Postby gordonw on Tue Mar 27, 2012 2:40 pm

Hi everyone
I've been using Linux Mint for around 5 years now, but this is my first foray onto the forums.

With most non-commercial distributions relying to some degree on donations for funding and volunteers for mirrors, I was wondering if anybody would consider paying to use a fast mirror service to download Linux ISOs, and what value people would put on such a service. How about if people could pay anything over some minimum amount, and the difference between those values was passed on the project that the ISO came from?

For reasons mentioned in this post I guess only codec free versions of distros such as Linux Mint could be provided this way.

If anybody has any opinions on this I'd be intrigued to hear them.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I doubt there's any market for what you would offer. Back in the dial-up BBS days when access was measured in minutes, faster might have sold then. Now, who doesn't have a couple extra minutes to wait for a download?

With Linux Mint downloading through the torrent link provided on the download page, the .iso downloads in a few minutes. I don't see much point in a mirror

I believe another factor would be that most people prefer the full DVD version with codecs.

Don't think so..
fast download is only 1/2 the equation, the other 1/2 is what people downloading have available to them as their service, ref their ISP speeds: faster means higher cost

If you were thinking of basing some services around Mint, as well as offering bandwidth for iso downloads, and pitched it right (meaning you could sell that idea/services), it is possible there could be a market/business there
--many have tried and failed, since the OSS world tends to see and therefore expect everything to be free.
Especially in regard to their favorite OS (Linux) and other application (OSS)..
