Kernel panic - was: Can't connect through ADDON NWP210

Postby phoenix1963 on Tue Mar 27, 2012 5:42 pm

EDIT2: My solution posted here, http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=98356#p562202 works for some, I get a kernel panic after about 400 MB network transfer.

Bu**er!

phoenix1953

EDIT: Solved.
Frankly look here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1608095, not in this thread.
I finally used to RT3062 drivers from Ralink.
The KEY STEP was blacklisting the default drivers as here http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10597871&postcount=8

Also the vanilla Ubuntu forums on solving WiFi issues https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessTroubleShootingGuide/Commands are rather more useful than these forums (though I don't doubt the posters here are doing thier best, it's just there's a lot more over at ubuntu.)

phoenix1963

P.S. If you see a device called wlan0 rather than ra0 when you type ifconfig , it's because the kernal is confused with too many drivers - I believe!

Hi, I'm connecting to my wireless router with WPA2-PSK Personal, the key is on a stick - so should be no problem.
The out-of-the-box wireless networking finds the wireless network, but cannot connect.
Weirdly, my router claims this PC is attached twice with the same MAC address... odd.

Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service smbd reload

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the reload(8) utility, e.g. reload smbd

Extra Info: ADDON supply a linux driver with a Makefile. It appears to be a rebadged RT2860STA, is it as simple as extracting the linux source, typing make and make install?

I don't think Linux supports Windows's network setup USB sticks - you'll have to type the WPA2 key manually. Do you see your network when clicking the network icon in the tray, and if yes, does anything happen when clicking the network?

Hi Bertie (!), sorry, as I'm new to Mint, I'm not sure which bit is the "tray".

When I start, there is a "disconnected network" symbol in the top right hand corner of the screen on a bar.
I can click on this, a panel opens and allows me to switch on the wireless.

The I go to System Settings>Network>Wireless select "Other" from the network name, then the "Configure" button.

I set it to WPA, WPA2, set the SSID for my wireless network, cut-and-paste my huge hex key into the appropriate box.

Step A:It then says "Connecting" for about a minute. At some point above the "disconnected network" symbol changes to an "aerial" symbol.
Up pops a panel asking for an authentication key (but the key I pasted is already in the input box). I hit "connect" or similar.
Then it repeats from Step A ad infinitum.

I indeed meant that network icon in the top-right.

You should connect by clicking that icon and then your network's name, instead of manual configuration from system settings.

Bertie - When I click on the network icon I get a list of adapters. Clicking on the wireless adaptor simply seems to turn the wireless on or off. I do not get a network name (SSID) option.

Then you'll indeed need the driver. Your card has a Ralink RT3062 for which you can indeed use rt2860sta. It should have a readme file, or you can probably get the driver for the RT3062 from Ralink's website.

The manufacturer's cd has source for the linux driver.
So do I just unpack it and type make & make install?
Basically are all the c libraries and dependencies in place in the default install?

Cheers,

You probably need to install the linux-source package before it will compile. Use software manager with a wired connection, or get it from http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ ... 30_all.deb.

And indeed, it's just make and then sudo make install, unless the driver's readme file tells you to do it otherwise.

Drivers on CD's might be outdated and fail to compile on newer Linux versions - if that's the case, you can get a newer version of rt2860sta from Ralink's website.

OK, so I installed the linux-source package, typed "make" - it seemed to compile OK, typed "sudo make install", it seemed to install OK.
Then I restarted the system, but nothing is any better.
So I edited the RT2860STA.dat config file to set some of the configs: SSID=my_router_SSID_edited_for_security ; AuthMode=WPA2PSK ; EncrypType=AES ; WPAPSK=long_hex_key_edited_for_security
With no further success.

Getting a bit desperate now!

So now I've tried the installer from Ralink.
Unfortunately I get:
Code: Select all
cc -MMD -O2 -Wall -g -I. -I../utils -I../hostapd -DCONFIG_BACKEND_FILE -DCONFIG_DRIVER_RALINK -DCONFIG_DRIVER_WIRED -DEAP_TLS -DEAP_PEAP -DEAP_TTLS -DEAP_MD5 -DEAP_MSCHAPv2 -DEAP_GTC -DEAP_OTP -DEAP_LEAP -DEAP_TLV -DIEEE8021X_EAPOL -DEAP_TLS_FUNCS -DEAP_TLS_OPENSSL -DPKCS12_FUNCS -DCONFIG_SMARTCARD -DINTERNAL_SHA256 -DCONFIG_CTRL_IFACE -DCONFIG_CTRL_IFACE_UNIX -DCONFIG_PEERKEY   -c -o tls_openssl.o tls_openssl.c
tls_openssl.c:23:25: fatal error: openssl/ssl.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
make: *** [tls_openssl.o] Error 1

But when I try "apt install openssl" it says I'm up-to-date.

Any suggestions?

You also need openssl-dev or something like that if you want to compile software that relies on openssl.

However well-written Linux drivers should use the built in WPA functions and not require manual editing of a file with SSID and WPA2 key. rt2860sta has been part of the kernel (but removed as the default Linux drivers, i.e. the rt2x00 project, were working well for most people).

This is getting a bit deep! I tried the following:
apt install openssl-dev
[sudo] password for xxxx:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package openssl-dev
and...

apt-get source openssl
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list

...even though the sources.list has the usual mint & ubuntu URIs.

I have found the following http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1476007 which suggests (which is I think your point in the post above) that HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT should be "y" when building.
I presume that means you get the tool to discover wireless networks.
Doesn't solve my openssl problem though.

You should be able to enable Source code in Software Sources (in the menu) to solve the sources.list problem.

After enabling "source code" in software sources you can just install openssl-dev (no need to get the full source, you don't need to compile openssl, you need to compile a driver which depends on openssl).

Right, despite enabling source code in the Pakage Manager I never seem to be able to get openssl-dev.

I also realised I'd been using a rather old 2009 webpage driver installer from Ralink, and I suspect the need for Openssl might be driven by the webpage installer rather than the actual drivers, reading http://community.linuxmint.com/hardware/view/3409 I realised I should be using http://www.ralink.com.tw/en/04_support/license.php?sn=5018 from http://www.ralink.com.tw/en/04_support/support.php?sn=501, so I downloaded that and followed the README:

If you want for rt2860 driver to auto-load at boot time:
A) choose ra0 for first RT2860 WLAN card, ra1 for second RT2860 WLAN card, etc.

B) create(edit) 'ifcfg-ra0' file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/,
   edit( or add the line) in /etc/modules.conf:
       alias ra0 rt2860sta

C) edit(create) the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ra0
   DEVICE='ra0'
   ONBOOT='yes'

NOTE:
   if you use dhcp, add this line too .
    BOOTPROTO='dhcp'

*D) To ease the Default Gateway setting,
    add the line
    GATEWAY=x.x.x.x
    in /etc/sysconfig/network

This compiled fine, except that in step 3 in the Build Instructions I couldn't understand the following (because the wpa directory didn't exist):
Code: Select all
      => #>cd wpa_supplicant-x.x
      => #>./wpa_supplicant -Dwext -ira0 -c wpa_supplicant.conf -d

But ho-hum, it seems to compile ok anyway.

Finally at the end we have:
Code: Select all
B) create(edit) 'ifcfg-ra0' file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/,
   edit( or add the line) in /etc/modules.conf:
       alias ra0 rt2860sta

C) edit(create) the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ra0
   DEVICE='ra0'
   ONBOOT='yes'

NOTE:
   if you use dhcp, add this line too .
    BOOTPROTO='dhcp'

...but /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ doesn't seem to exist.

Anyway, I rebooted, and now I have a wlan0 (rather than an ra0 ??), but no network connection tool, so back to square one!

P.S. thanks for being patient with someone with a dangerous little knowledge!
P.P.S> What does "Upon reinstall of Mint Debian..." mean?
P.P.P.S. Oops, I forgot to say that the
Code: Select all
/sbin/insmod rt2860sta.ko
didn't work either.

phoenix1963 wrote:P.S. If you see a device called wlan0 rather than ra0 when you type ifconfig , it's because the kernal is confused with too many drivers - I believe!

The kernel's default drivers always use wlan0 (for some old drivers eth1 is used instead). ra0 is used only by Ralink's own drivers.
