[Solved]Pan 0.135 Newsreader + Need help installing

Postby CtrlAltDel on Mon Apr 02, 2012 3:14 am

Pan 0.135, the latest version, isn't available in the Linux Mint repositories. I have tried to manually install it and receive a message that GTK+ 2.16.0 needs to be installed to continue.

The version of GTK+ that Linux Mint 11 Katya uses is 2.24.4.

Has anyone found a way to install Pan 0.135 on Mint? I am new to Linux and don't really know what would happen or if something would break if I tried to install GTK+ 2.16.0 with a newer version already installed.

Anyway, my question is has anyone had any success while using Linux Mint 11 Katya/64 bit and getting Pan 0.135 to install and if you have, can you please instruct me on how to install it.

At the moment, I have the older version of Pan, 0.133, installed.

Thanks.

I realize this is an odd question, as not that many people use newsreaders for newsgroups any longer, it's all going to Google Groups and using browsers to access newgroups. Or, for that matter, not many people even use newsgroups at all.

But, if anyone is out there that may have some information on this, I would be very grateful.

To reiterate and try to encapsulate all the rambling:

Pan 0.135 is the newest version but I believe it's still in beta form and I can see why it wouldn't be in the repositories.

But, Pan 0.134: "Wait for Me", has been out in final form since February 15, 2011 and it isn't available for Linux Mint users in their repositories.

Does anyone know why Pan is being overlooked? I would be happy just to be able to upgrade to the 0.134 version but, every time I try to manually do it, I receive the error about the wrong GTK+ version. I guess Linux Mint Katya's GTK+ is too new or something, I'm not sure.

As of now, I'm still using a version of Pan, 0.133, all the way back from 2008.

When you don't find a package in the repositories, the next step is to find a ppa(informal ubuntu sponsored packages)
I generally search for "ubuntu <name-of-package> ppa" and cross my fingers.

Thanks a whole lot, Dagon. I'll check back in later and update you and let you know if I got it installed. I am a newbie to all of this, really, but I'm sure I can figure out how to add it in.

I'm back and it's now installed and working great, Dagon. I really appreciate it.

I have been trying different elaborate installation routines for several months and had never been able to get them to work because of the GTK+ errors. I would try it and give up and then try it again a few weeks later and give up and repeat and repeat.

I followed your link and used the instructions provided and within 10 minutes had the latest version installed and usuable.

Thanks again,

Altie

dagon delivers... 8)

Often installing from source will give you no problem but when it does there is no limit to the amounts of frustration.
There is an application to simplify ppa handling, y-ppa-manager. It lets you search launchpad and install a bit easier.
So, next time your package isn't in the repo:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install y-ppa-manager
