virtualbox install bricked

i installed virtualbox 4.1 and virtualbox through synaptic package manager and all recommended installs on package list

i now have a brick

no side top or bottom bars

no admin access but can find and use terminal through right click on desktop

can not activate my nvidia driver as no admin access

uninstalled both virtualbox programs through sudo synaptic

still have a modified brick with basic vid driver / no side bars / no top or bottom bars so no programs

As you have access to a terminal I would try the command

And see if that does anything for you.

You haven't said which desktop you are using, but whatever it is could you try loading a different one from the login window just to see if this brings the machine back into a more usable state.

It is a mystery to me how installing virtualbox can cause all this to happen, are you sure you didn't install/update anything else prior to or at the same time as vbox? It might give us a clue if that is the case. To use the terminal to search the apt history run the command

At the very least it will tell you what programs were installed at the same time as vbox.

Edit. I just had a look at installing vbox on my mint12 (which runs in virtualbox, so it could get a bit confusing if I actually did it!! ). The following things struck me. You said you installed both virtualbox and virtualbox4.1 now I am not sure that you are supposed to install both, I certainly don't have both installed in LMDE which is my virtualbox host, so for future reference the best choice there would have been virtualbox-dkms as this automatically installs the correct vbox version as well as the modules to cope with kernel changes. You also say you installed "all recommended installs on package list". Now this could mean one of two things. Firstly it could mean that you installed all the dependencies - you would have to or you couldn't install vbox. Secondly it could mean that you right clicked the file in Synaptic and selected the 'mark recommended for installation' option. Personally I never do this in synaptic and to illustrate why, I tried it in my mint12 install (which doesn't have vbox installed). The number of 'recommendations' was huge and included about 30 new kernels I think this illustrates that the 'recommendations' option should be treated with a little scepticism. I also note that it wanted to 'recommend' several different 'mesa' packages as well. In the past these have frequently baulked nvidia drivers on LMDE so they could be what is causing the trouble with your system.

yes installed all on the recommended list right click and select ( as you will see from the list )

yes mesa x11 was the vid driver ( checked system specs ) ... i noticed system sluggish after install ( playing freedroid )

after i uninstalled the virtual box mesa was replaced after reboot with basic vid driver

ran su in terminal and locked up

killed ap with cntr alt back

looked on entry screen and found it was using gnome so changed to cinnamon .. that allowed download and install of nvidia driver

have bottom bar and menu .. yayyyy

Well as long as you are happy.

I see from the apt log that the transaction replaced libgl1-mesa-glx with libgl1-mesa-swx11 and you also had some mesa development packages installed before that weren't replaced. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the cause of the problem, but it is only a hunch so I wouldn't mess around with those packages if you are happy with what you have got, I could be wrong and it might make it worse.
