Can't log on with Cinnamon.

Postby xzcallaway on Mon Apr 02, 2012 8:36 pm

I'm trying Mint 12 with the Cinnamon on live cd first before I install it. My computer is Fujitsu lifebook t4410 (that's a laptop) with 1 gigabyte of ram.

My problem is when I log out of mint and choose anything other than just Gnome, whether its cinnamon, meta, gnome classic of whatever, the computer switches back to just Gnome before I even get logged back in.

I don't know how to check how much ram my computer is using and I don't know how to check what hardware it has, so in other words, I don't know what kind of graphics card it has.

Can someone tell me how to check these things because they might effect cinnamon and / or how to get cinnamon working from this point.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I just tried a Mint 12 live dvd and I couldn't log out and then log into the other desktops either (Gnome classic or mate).
It just kept going back to the default Gnome.
You'd have to be at least running from a live usb with persistence to be able to do this, I think.

In the default Gnome session:
click Menu > System Tools > System Settings > System Info
This will give you graphics information.

Can also do:
Menu > System Tools > System Monitor
System tab will give general info including memory
Resources tab will give more detailed memory usage.
or
Menu > All Applications > System Profiler and Benchmark

I'm running a full install of Mint 12 on a 16 gb usb stick (with Cinnamon installed).
I have 2gb ram - it's running ok. In Cinnamon Settings > Effects, I have unticked "Enable desktop effects".
The system requirements for Linux Mint 12 say
512 MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage)

EDIT: After posting this I tried again with a live usb with persistence - the same thing happens - it defaults to Gnome when you try to
log into one of the other desktop environments.
