How to install driver for Brother MFC-5890CN?

Postby markharrison on Wed Mar 28, 2012 4:27 pm

Hello Minters. I have a new Brother MFC-5890CN all in one and the driver isn't listed so have had to download it from the brother website. Now have this download sitting in the download file but it doesn't do anything! how do I get it to run and install the driver? do I have to do something in terminal? if I do I will need a step by step guide as I know nothing when it comes to the Terminal.......all help will be very welcome.

Thanks

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I'm assuming you downloaded from here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/index.html? Did you download the .deb file? The .rpm files are for Red Hat based distros and don't work on Linux Mint (well, you can with some workarounds, but use the .deb file if it is available :D). You can install the .deb files from the command line with dpkg. I think you need to install the CUPS driver, so following this guide: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... prn1a.html

I've never installed it in mint before only fedora, the process should be largely the same.. give this a try.

from the website mentioned above, download the lpr and the cups wrapper. Dude above me is right about the cups wrapper but it uses the LPR file as a dependency so download and install both the (.deb) ones not .rpm lol. once downloaded.. right click and click open with software install or something like that. its the first option..
then type localhost:631 in chrome or firefox and click administration, add printer, login and then your printer should be displayed and follow the prompts. hope that works.
