Will you update or reinstall?

Postby claudecat on Wed Apr 04, 2012 2:35 am

I just read the huge thread on UP 4 and I'm wondering... how many folks will try to upgrade rather than reinstall when the new iso is out? It just looks like a mine field of potential system-borkage to me. I've been rather happy staying at UP 3, and my bandwidth usage here has been negligable for months now :). I'm probably gonna keep things at UP 3 here, if only as a museum exhibit of what was possible with gnome 2.

I'll no doubt install the new iso as well, as I'm a bit of a distro-holic, but I'm still not too keen on gnome-shell, unity or even cinnamon. I've switched to KDE, but I also kinda like xfce and fluxbox. That said, if any distro is going to be able to make gnome 3 less horrifying, Mint will be it. For now though, it's KDE or UP3 for me (for daily use) until this all shakes out, and probably beyond. How about you?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Well, you should've made a poll then :)

claudecat wrote:I'm still not too keen on gnome-shell, unity or even cinnamon.

How in the name of Linus does it happen - people talk about post-Gnome2 choices and never ever mention MATE? :D

claudecat wrote:How about you?

I'll probably make a proper backup of my system and then update to UP4 when it's out officially. I also happen to have an old virtual machine with exactly the same LMDE setup I have here on real PC, so I may as well upgrade it first to see if everything goes smoothly. 8)

If you look at it logically you might as well try and upgrade first. If it doesn't work you will probably have to reinstall anyway (unless you have disk images). Otoh, If you decide to just reinstall you will never know if the update would have worked for you, would you? You also negate one of the main points in running a rolling release distribution.

In your case though gnome 3 is not an issue because if you like flux you can easily install that and ignore gnome3, but if negligible bandwidth is your main criteria you would probably be better off tracking debian stable repos.

claudecat,
- where are the real borkage issues in the UP3>UP4 transition? i was there and things were quiet smooth (if you consider the 1GiB size update);
- and a couple of the issues (xorg held back, xchat and themes-engine replaced were already addressed)
- MATE just got today another big update (with a little oops) but it's going very very well, thank you :)
- and finally if you need/want time to decide take these for now:
Last but not least, if you’re still not convinced by the alternatives you can freeze your LMDE system and avoid Update Pack 4 (thus keeping Update Pack 3 and Gnome 2), by pointing to the following repositories:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb-src http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/gnome2-frozen testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/gnome2-frozen/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/gnome2-frozen/multimedia testing main non-free

We hate to put people in a position where they can’t choose, so we will maintain these repositories for a little while, but please consider your options going forward as Gnome 2 will eventually completely disappear.

Hey claudecat. I am going to from scratch and do some partition reorganizing at the same time. Right now I have XFCE on top of LMDE and Mageia, both of which I like but I need to make room for the UP4 install. Enjoy

And so the story goes on, Update Pack 4 is finally out, and now it's time for our heroes to decide if it's update or reinstall. As usual, check out the comments where Clem answers the most urgent questions. :)

I'm doing right now a crean install from UP2 and an update to UP4. 1400 packages to install/update, more than 780 mb.

Hey everyone,

I know you all are trying real hard to keep up with current technology (Which BTW seems to be more difficult to bother with than anything else, not easier), but there are a lot of us that are quite tired of having to tweak our systems everso often just to make things work....me, the issue I have is that the xiphos and bibletime software won't work above kernel 3.0.0-1....I've raised this issue before and just got shot down by individuals who say that it works fine on theirs....well, everyone has a different system, with different configurations and setups. There is however suppose to be a new version of xiphos (3.1.5) and bibletime (2.9.1), I'm not sure if you all are aware of it or not, I personally haven't seen anything in synaptic, but we need software that's compatible with all these new changes in kernels and other desktop alternatives.....could we at least look into this, instead of just blowing people off...thanks....cheers

Andrew

Hell. I'm expecting the ISOs.

Honestly I had a couple of problems but I achieved to install everything. I'll ilustrate it in phases

phase 0: Update mintupdate-debian
phase 1: Click in Install Updates
phase 2: Waiting until the download of all the neccesary packages
phase 3: Beggining of the installation

At some moment, the installation stops the network-manager

Suddenly....

gconftool-2: error while loading shared libraries: libgconf-2.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
dpkg: error al procesar gconf2 (--unpack):
el subproceso instalado el script post-installation devolvió el código de salida de error 127
Se encontraron errores al procesar:
gconf2

Then, what did I do? I restarted the computer. And what happened? It went straight to tty (i thougth the worst). Hopefully I could do startx. One problem: no network-manager.

I opened synaptic and I've seen these broken packages.

libreoffice-gnome:amd64 (3.4.5-5),
libgl1-mesa-dev:amd64 (7.11.2-1),
xserver-xorg-video-mach64:amd64 (6.9.0-1+b1),
xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion:amd64 (1.7.5-1+b2),
libgconf2-4:amd64 (3.2.3-3),
xserver-xorg-video-r128:amd64 (6.8.1-5+b2),
python-uno:amd64 (3.4.5-5),
xserver-xorg-video-tseng:amd64 (1.2.4-2+b2)

I reinstalled them. And then I continued the upgrading (I couldn't connect to internet but all the packages were previously downloaded). After I restarted and........here I am. Everything works fine.

LMDE is rolling, so the upgrade should be smooth. In fact, it is not really considered to be a new release. Think of it as taking LM 12 and apply all upgrades( of e.g. firefox/thunderbird) and then putting them back into the new image. Installing the new image or using the old ones and then upgrade makes not much difference. Theoretically you can just upgrade, but I've never tried.

I was skeptical about upgrading to pak 4 but I finally got the courage up and decided to go for it. So I did the mint update then went for the Pack 4 and crossed my fingers. Everything went smooth as silk. No errors or problems of any kind, well except for the fact that could figure out how to shut down the system. :D After upgrading to Pack4 I decided to go for mate also, so I went to the package manager and installed mate-desktop-enviroment. Again everything went smooth without a hitch.

To tell you the truth, I didn't think that I would keep LMDE because I was going to miss Gnome 2, but let me say that after installing Mate ! I love it. Very close to Gnome 2 and it just feels familiar. I like it lot.
The only problem that I have with Mate, it that I can not figure out how to get the "Don't ask for password on Login" . It is grayed out and I have to put in a password every time that I log in , which isn't any big deal but I don't really need it because there is no one else around to use my computer. But someone will figure out how to do it, I am sure.

That is my 2 cents on updating to pack 4.

Passwordless login

That is not a Mate problem (I use XFCE) it is in all LMDE systems. I believe it is the way Debian does GDM the Ubuntu and derivatives (including LM editions based in Buntuland) give you the option per user!

If You Search these forums using 'paswordless login' or 'auto-login' you'll find some posts saying where/what to edit to by-pass the GDM login screen.

P.S. only works for one(1) user tho, that seems to be what you do (my Xubuntu puter goes directly to a user desktop (no login screen at all) Only asks for a password when needs root/admin access.

forgot to say

reinstalled the 201209 ISO and upgraded to Pack4 (after changing repo/soureces again). Beside the time (1400 changes) on the slow server (overloaded because pack just out), the process went smoothly. Downloaded all and then aborted after roughly half applied. BUT restarted Update Manager and finished other half without problem! No need to fix broken packages (that's what error said when aborted). Also clicked to keep all changed config files (more then a couple).

P.S. because of theme changes the log-out popup is a series of boxes (just click second set (restart), all will be fine after the restart.

Ok, so I decided to try the gnome2-frozen option for now - but even that is not without error. Broken dependencies for xchat and banshee. Oh, and mintmenu wants to pull in a bunch of MATE stuff I don't want. Why did I do this? I simply can't justify dl-ing 800+ GB of updates for a system I won't like as much as gnome2 (already been there/done that with Mint 12) - though I will grab the new iso when it's out and install that too just for grins. I dunno though - when each item in System Settings gives you only 1 or 2 things to set... and don't get me started on gnome-tweak-tool and that ridiculous graphic of the dude with the keyboard leaking from his brain.

Looks like the end of an era to me. MATE is ok, and Cinnamon shows promise and will probably emerge as the Mint default, but neither are as good as gnome2 was. Thankfully, there is still KDE (my new DE of choice) and Xfce. Booting into my now-frozen LMDE or Debian Squeeze (Parsix, CentOS and Fuduntu are among other options btw) is becoming more of a nostalgic experience than anything else lately. And to think that a year ago I did EVERYTHING in gnome. LMDE was my favorite distro for maybe 6-8 months. Now Mint 12 KDE is the only Mint (or 'buntu/Debian variant) in my top 5. Not that that matters to anyone else, after all many love the new DE's. Just like some folks enjoy cauliflower - it just ain't for me.

Andrew, for reasons beyond me I ran into dependency problems with both Bibletime and Xiphos on a computer with the exact same setup as another computer that would run both of those programs. In the end I just installed Alkitab. You need java to run it, but basically it works like Bibletime, you just download from their web site, extract it, then click on the install icon and follow instructions. You install bibles and other programs just as with Bibletime. It's a nice program and doesn't get into the dependency mess. Hope this helps!
