Hello from Poland

Hello everybody,

I'm new to Linux Mint, which I installed just a few days ago on my Compaq 6910p. Earlier I used to have Vista Profesional on it but it was really annoying and made me quite furious due to its lags and problems with long start of the system and applications. Many times a day Firefox froze and I could do literally nothing. The same thing happened to other apps. So it's quite a relief for me to see how smoothly LM runs on my laptop. I really like the system, though it's a fresh experience. I also use Ubuntu since more than a year (now with Gnome Shell) on my Samsung NC10. So I'm relatively new to Linux, and not an expert at all. So I hope to learn a lot here.

What I like in Mint (so far): smoothness, speed, nice, fresh look (esp. Cinnamon ). And that everything runs out of the box (alternatively to Ubunty, where I had to install a lot of things myself).
What I dislike in Mint (so far): bad localization (I mean Polish version is mostly... English). For me in general it is not a problem - as you can see I speak English a little bit. But on the other hand - why can't I have Polish version? In that respect Ubuntu is far better. Their Polish version IS Polish.

As Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, I'm surprised that you found some applications are not translated to Polish in Linux Mint, but are in Ubuntu. Can you give some examples? Yeah, I'm surprised as well... Well, not to search very far: Libre Office - user interface is in English. The same is with Firefox. Also Cinnamon main manu has some untranslated entries (in brackets I give Polish translations): Accessories (Akcesoria); Games (Gry); Graphics (Grafika); Office (Biuro); Other (Inne - or alternatively= - Pozostałe); Sound & Video (Dźwięk i Wideo); System Tools (Narzędzia Systemowe); Preferences (Preferencje); Administration (Narzędzia Administracyjne). And in the leftmost panel of the main manu although most entries are translated their descriptions aren't: Ustawienia Cinnamon (which is correct) but description is English: Fine-tune Cinnamon settings (Dostosuj ustawienia Cinnamon) and so on...

I know this is perhaps not a big deal but it influences the way so-called "average user" perceives the system. I looked at the translation project webpage but there everything seems to be translated. So I really don't know where is the problem.

I'm assuming you did select Polish during the installation? If you added Polish as a language after installation, you will probably have to install a language pack or change your user's LibreOffice and Firefox configuration (both applications ignore the language as set in the environment, so you will have to configure them manually if you did not select Polish during installation of Linux Mint).

For LibreOffice, check that you have installed: libreoffice-l10n-pl

For Firefox: firefox-locale-pl
