I've had this laptop for a while and I cannot get any recent version of any linux distro to work. The problem is with the graphics driver. I get random hard hangs with diagonal patterns on the screen. Only a hard reset works.
This is not a new problem, its related to Nvidia and Nouvou graphics drivers not playing nice with the geforce go 6100 chip.
I have seen a few people posting in here with other minor issues but noone mentions the above, so I'm hoping its not a problem for Mint. Otherwise I have the pain of windows vista.
Can anyone confirm they don't have this problem? It usually happens after an hour or so. It was never an issue on OpenSuse 11.2 but this is now no longer supported for security patches and updates break it anyway.

You can prove to config the grub config file to use the nomedeset option. Some graphics cards drivers needs to enable the nomedeset, i don´t know if is it will be useful for your specific case, but you dont lose anything proving it.
For an example of enabling the nomodeset option you can go to this link :

In this link i give instruccions to a user to acces to the linux log file, and to enable the nomodeset option.
note: instead "nouveau.setmode=0" you must use "radeon.setmode=0"

Why use radeon.setmode=0? this would be for Ati cards would it not?
I have tried the nomodest command line option with no joy, but nouveau.setmode=0 and radeon.setmode=0 are new to me.
Currently I'm using version 96 of Nvidia proprietry drivers as this is supposed to be the most stable for older graphics chips.
It doesn't seem like I can use either of the above parameters. But I'll give them a try.

You can prove the nomedeset and its lines. Note: the gallium 0.3 (nouveaud nv) open source drivers, dont support your mobile geforce 6100? because the open-sourcee drivers are more stable than the originals ones.
