Remove the default "PDF" Printer from LibreOffice: SOLVED!

Postby Meteor on Sat Nov 19, 2011 11:53 am

I'm running "Lisa" on my aged Gateway laptop and she performs very well. I'm still learning the new "quirks" but am pleased... except for the print function in LibreOffice Writer (haven't tried Calc, yet but don't think it'll be any different). When I put my mouse cursor on the print icon in the top bar of Writer, I'm told that the printer will be "Print File Directly (PDF)". I've turned the default "PDF" printer off in System Settings and thought that I had made my HP printer the default.

I've tried to delete the "PDF" printer using System Settings but I'm ignored. So, how do I get rid of this invisible PDF printer and make my HP the default and the only choice for any programme to use?

If this is being or has been fixed in the final release, I'll reluctantly wait. If not, how do I do it?

Thank you,
Meteor

Remove the "Print to PDF" with the following command (or remove the package "cups-pdf" with Package Manager):
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove cups-pdf

I'm miffled to find this package is installed again on Lisa. It should be taken out back and shot, and a few more times for good measure  It serves no purpose. LibreOffice has an "Export to PDF" function, and all other applications can use the printer "Print to File" to write to PDF. On Katya this package actually fails to print pages, it only gives empty pages due to a serious misconfiguration. It is easier to just remove it, and as detailed it is redundant anyway. Absolutely fantastic, Vincent! It worked without a hitch. That obscure, invisible PDF printer no longer makes an appearance in the Printer section of System Tools nor on LO Writer.

Thank you very much. "Lisa" is working great for me and your assistance made her even better.

Thanks also, Vincent. I jumped from Julia to Lisa recently. I've had the "Print to PDF" abort or fail several times, in case anyone else has had that problem in 12. The "Print to File" went without a hitch. I didn't even realize the "Print to File" option even offered PDF as a choice!
