Dramatic title i know but im really having problems installing lmde and can't figure out why...
I wanted to move from squeeze to the mint falvour for the non-free, more up to date applications and user friendly interface but here are the issues im having:
First tried installing from live usb for the slight increase in speed but it wanted admin passwords to perform admin actions which i didnt know so moved on to a live dvd instead.
Next, after selecting 'install mint' from the desktop i was sat waiting up to 5 minutes for the initial language selection screen to be displayed. Is this normal?
Then, after finally installing the OS the update manager tells me i need over 1000 updates, most of which fail to download. I had to leave the computer running over night because at one point it was tellin me i'd be waiting 6 hours for the update to complete.
I'm connected to the net through virgin media 30MB broadband using an ethernet cable.
I downloaded the torrent image from the linux mint website (64 bit gnome) twice and wrote each image to two different disks to make sure the write hadn't become corrupted somehow.
As i write this i'm using my girlfriends laptop because my computer is currently installing mint again for the 3rd time.
Ps. my computer is an AMD64, 40GB HDD with 2Gb ram, the drive is partitioned as ext4 with an extended partition containing 4GB of swap in case you were wondering.
Please let me know if any of these issues are unusual or if i'm doing something wrong.

-- Update: Now running install number 3 and experiencing the same problems. Update manager is showing mintupdate-debian 1.0.5 to replace 1.0.3 but i'm not going to select 'install updates' just yet. Perhaps possibly a problem with the source servers? Still no theories????
