Power Management With Video & Handbrake

Postby fauxpas on Sat Apr 07, 2012 1:17 am

Let me start by saying that LM12 is the closest I've been to experimenting a linux distro and am starting to feel no need to keep dropping back into windows to do stuff I can't do, or is too hard to do in linux...

Only a couple of issues I need resolved now...

Firstly, handbrake... Can someone steer me to a newb-centric install guige for a newb who rarely types into console? What I've got from google so far mentions something about ppa... What the? K9Copy works well for copy but I need handbrake...

Secondly, when watching vids more than a few minutes long, how do I get the power management to know I'm watching a video and nor dim display, hibernate etc?

Cheers for a grouse distro...

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Regarding Handbrake. You have a 32bit portable version here. It's super-easy to get started.
If you want the 64bit one, check this thread out. Especially my post that is the fourth from the bottom.

How do you make it executable? And how do you run it?

I get a error 404 on adding the ppa

From Nautilus, you can right-click, go to Permissions and tick "allow executing this file as program". After that you should be able to just double-click to execute.

Can't help with that one... All I know is that you can control when the screen locks in System Settings -> Screen and power options are in System Settings -> Power but I don't think there's a way to tell the system that playing videos is not the same as being idle. Maybe there's some app that can handle it.
