How Do I re-boot ?

Postby scotthge on Fri Apr 06, 2012 9:25 am

I applied update Pack 4 and everything went well with no glitches or errors. I have been playing around in the new kernel and the new look of LMDE but I can't seem to find a shutdown button. The only buttons that I can find are " switch user", "Log Out", "lock Screen", and "Suspend". I don't even see a way of adding a shut down button as in previous versions. I can't say that I care for the new menus but I guess I can bite the bullet and get used to it if I have to, if I could only shut down the laptop.

Does anyone have any idea's how I might be able to add a shutdown button ?

Have you used the integrated "Help"?

You have to log out before you can turn off.

Alternatively you can press Alt and "Log out" should turn to "Turn off". If your PC doesn't turn off after a while you should press Ctrl+Alt+Del and log off explicitely.

That is what I am saying.....I click my name at the top right corner and there is no shutdown only "Lock Screen", "Switch User", " Log Out" and "Suspend" That is it, nothing else.

Yes I have used the integrated Help ! That was the first thing that I did, The second was to google the problem. No solutions !

Another ideas?

When holding the Alt key you should have shutdown option there. But it should also be there without Alt key, please make sure it's enabled in Advanced Settings > Extensions.

Did you log out?

You could also try reboot in terminal.

In the terminal: sudo reboot reboots LMDE only (no motherboardbrand, no GRUB)
sudo reboot -f reboots the whole computer i.e. brings you back to the start-up sequence of the comp.

As root "halt" is the command to shut down.

There seems to be some problems with some hardware in this area with Debian testing. I have all installs on the same box and one out of 3 Debian testing install does still shut down using the menu.

I would rather use sudo shutdown now which is a more friendly way of shutting down in terminal.

Scotty, for the description it looks that you're using gnome-shell,
if so try this
Code: Select all
apt install gnome-tweak-tool gnome-shell-extensions
then open this newly installed gnome-tweak-tool (or advanced settings) and in the extensions pane activate "alternative-status-menu"

Thank you zerozero, it is working fine. I even installed MATE with no errors and things went as smooth a silk'
I do have a question for you though. If I change the /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf so it reads
[daemon]
# AutomaticLoginEnable = true
# AutomaticLogin = <glenn>

This should let me log in without a password but when I remove the #'s, the computer will boot but the desktop never shows up. It just hangs with a black screen.
So I am beginning to think that there is something different that I have to do. Under the "Users and Groups" menu, the "Don't ask for password at login" is greyed out.

This is the only quirk that I can find that I would like to change. I like MATE, it is really alot like Gnome2 and feel comfortable. I really like it so far.

Am I going about this the correct way to log in with no password?

Scott

You are correct.

gksu gedit /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf

and underneath
[daemon]
Add the next lines:

[daemon]
Code: Select all
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=username

where username is your name

To stop auto login just change the true to false

Perhaps your problem is the < > around your name.
Also NO Spaces before or after =

Oh boy I feel like an idiot. Thanks for pointing that out GeneC. I didn't even pay attention to the <>. I will give it a try, I bet it will work.

Hey GeneC,

I have noticed something, I have double icons in the menu now! I checked the properties of each icon and I have one for Gnome and one for Mate. Should I remove Gnome if I have mate and vise versa ? I have never installed a desktop environment over a previous environment before. Just wondering. I will go see if I can find some information on that.

Scotty,
the duplicated icons can be solved with a menu editor: alacarte in gnome and mozo in mate (without the need to uninstall on the DE's)
