Pretty much decided that Mint is not for me.

Postby earthshaker on Sat Apr 07, 2012 9:18 am

I have installed, three versions of Ubuntu of the past couple of years. I find out that Mint is the one to get. So I do all the things to make it happen...well it doesn't. All of this has been posted here before. I try different approaches, none work.
I tried the basic "load from dvd", "plopped", following instructions from Viking, here. Again nothing happens like it should.
Ok there are people here that can make it happen for the rest of us, the lower level geeks.. so why hasn't this been done?

I read great things about Mint, things that I don't have the ability to obtain. I think the developers need to take a hard look, at a way to make Mint work for everyone.

No one can help you if you don't actually describe the problem. "Nothing happens like it should" is way too general. Would you call the auto shop and say "my car doesn't work like it should" and expect them to know what the hell you mean without further elaboration?

Nothing will work for everyone, whether it is a style they won't like or some other reason..

Here you go it this is all I get,
/init:line 7: can't open/dev/sr0: no medium found
then repeats the same with /dev/sr1
does that for a while
then stops scrolling
ata_id[236] HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sr1' : No message of desired type
pops up BusyBox v1.18.4(ubuntu 1:18.4-2ubuntu2) built-in shell (ash)
(initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
help
Built-in commands:
then it lists all the commands.

I hope this means something to someone here, it doesn't mean squat to me.

Funny how Mint is the only OS that will actually work right for me.
Could be my computer but still, I love Mint

Seriously? None of you guys is going to help him?

Look, I know he didn't approach the right way (sorry, eatrhshaker, you didn't) and he was fairly unspecific, but the guy has problems and needs some help; none of you have offered to help, all you did was complain about his unclearity and mock his words. Seriously, what is wrong with you people?

OK, you can stop reading now, I just wanted to give you that little nag ;)

Now, earthshaker, I believe that what is happening to you is that you don't even get to the tty's and only get basic comands (it is OK if you don't know what it means, you don't have to); that usually happens when you have a faulty ISO or burned your disk wrongly. So, with the posibility in mind that your ISO is wrong, I would suggest downloading it again and check it with an md5sum hash (you can find some info about what it is and how to do it here) and then try to burn the disk again. If you just do that I can assure you that it will work (that unless you have some faulty hardware piece, which is not that much likely) and you will have a functioning Live (CD? DVD? USB?) Mint running up and ready to install.

Please, don't hessitate to post here if you have any problems; I would be very happy to help you with whatever it is.
Cheer up! Things are getting worse at a slower rate.

+1

I think people underestimate the level of frustration and disappointment that many new users experience when trying mint. I honestly had higher hopes for it and after a few days I am uninstalling it. I have a nice new laptop, and mint is slow on it. It gives many errors, most of which are just gibberish that I could spend hours googling one after the other if I had the time.

Before you lock the thread, consider that this user above me, and I actually took the time to come here and give you a tiny sliver of what a large number of users think but do not bother to report.

Up and running! here is what I did to make it work, first of all I posted on this forum, then I downloaded a new iso and burned it using a different burner at 4x. I used cdburner xp pro, a freeware app for windows. My original burn was done using infrarecorder, then I used roxio (it came with my vista machine). I have had good luck with cdburner xp pro in the past, why I didn't use it for this project I will never know. So thanks go out to those that deserve it, for the rest of you thanks also, be kind to people like me in the future, and tell us what you need to know right off the bat, so we can make it work (what ever it is)

After the install it seems the Software Manager is slow to respond, any ideas?

Just FYI, there's a nice little thread at the top of the forums on how to get help :)

About the Software Manager, what do you mean "slow"? Sometimes, a 20 second response time can be normal for software manager if you're running on slower computers.

P.S. If you didn't already know, you should always try to burn install discs at the slowest possible speed. If you have a bad disc tray like mine, a single bump at high speed is all it takes to screw up your disc for good.

Slow as in, click a file, then the basic data about that file, shows up 5-10 seconds later. FYI, I did a search and found a thread, and tried what was suggested before I posted my question, and it didn't work.
I have been around forums for years, all the rules are pretty much the same. I only post a new question after I looked for an answer, and didn't find one.

I have found that the most recent version of the Ubuntu Software Center (11.10) responds quicker than Mint's Software Manager; not just in initial launch, but while browsing through categories as well. That said, the UBC that came with Oneiric doesn't exactly launch like lightning either, but still quicker than Mint's. You may wish to install the UBC and see if it works better for your needs.

I've been running Ubuntu 12.04 since it was alpha and the Software Center responsiveness in that release is markedly faster than the one 11.10.

With luck Mint's Software Manager will be peppier come Mint 13 as well; it's a fine program in it's own right.
