Huge aptitude download (& freeze)

Postby userzero on Sun Apr 08, 2012 6:56 pm

Hi All,

So I use the command line with aptitude aptitude upgrade and I get the following which just keeps increasing the numbers shown and then eventually frrezes and locks up my session so I have to do a hard reboot:

polaris ~ # aptitude upgrade
Resolving dependencies...
open: 2880; closed: 5364; defer: 38; conflict: 123

Using Synaptic shows 1302 available updates. New debian release (?)
I've tried this editing sources.list with both "testing" and "Wheezy" in by repo lines- no difference in taking forever then freezing my system. Any idea what's going on here?

Thanks Much,

Chris

let's see:
1- the servers are under stress atm, so it's possible to see some unusual behaviors.
2- you edited the repos wheezy and/or testing, but from what?
3- what was your original sources.list?
4- when was the last time you updated? you mentioned testing/wheezy, so i assume you're not using UP
5- you sure know how to use aptitude :) and did a sudo aptitude update before the sudo aptitude upgrade (that should be replaced by full-upgrade but that is another war  )

Hi zerozero,

Let's see...

I have stock (see below) repos and just temorarily switched the "testing" entry in repo lines to "wheezy" and then back again. I was thinking there may be a new "testing" now and wanted to follow "wheezy" instead of a huge package dump. Of course I ran aptitude upgrade after the switch (or any switch in sources.list for that matter) ;-)

My repos: (this is how they look now- after the switch test)

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

So the last time I updated was today. I guess my main question is why is there a sudden 1302 package availability when I do a simple aptitude upgrade?

ahh i see (i think  )
Update-Pack 4 was released a couple days ago that's why you're seeing that amount of updates (it's not a new testing release)

but before you go further, you should look at your sources.list and correct them per the same blog page i linked above (the main debian repo, multimedia and security are now mirrored by mint under debian.linuxmint/xx)

and a final word, when using latest (as you are using) you can't interchange testing with wheezy in the sources.list (as you could do if you were using the direct debian repos (debian.linuxmint/latest wheezy doesn't exist)
