LMDE Service Pack 4 Wifi outage

Postby Anthillacres on Sat Apr 07, 2012 9:48 am

Service pack 4 loaded well and is fully functional. I went to bed and the wifi was working fine in the morning no wifi. I checked the network and it is working fine. Rebooted with no effect. Inserted a Linksys USB wifi and it registered with the operating system but showed no wifi. I then rebooted into Mint12, and the wifi works fine. Same computer just another OS from the GRUB. Everything else works in either OS, and the wifi worked last night on LMDE. Was there an autoloading update over night?

I just loaded Service Pack 4 and my Broadcom wireless isn't working. I pulled out the LMDE tutorial and started running the commands. When I run "m-a a-i broadcom-sta" it says it's not able to continue the build. Now what?

I'm having the same darn problem with my wifi after upgrading to UP4. (Running LMDE Xfce 64x)

1. System boots up into TTY mode, so i have to run "startx" to boot Xfce.

2. The network manager applet won't start, and I can't start it from the terminal, nor add it to the panel.

3. No freaking Wifi. (no it's not a hardware issue, i checked. Wifi works fine in Windows)

4. Theme is screwed up. (White background in gedit, distorted colors in window boarders, etc.)

Oh, and here's a list of packages that failed to update:

Code: Select all
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libgdk-pixbuf2.0-dev
 libgconf2-4
 libreoffice-gnome
 gdm3
 libgtk2.0-dev
 gucharmap
 libnm-gtk0
 gconf2
 python-uno
 network-manager-gnome
 gnome-session-bin
 libatspi1.0-0
 xchat-common
 pidgin
 gnome-mag
 xchat

Oh, and I might mention that I was running a modified version of Xfce before the update...

At this point I've tried so many things I'm not sure were I am anymore with everything that has been installed and uninstalled trying to fix this. I may have to start all over. The good news is for now this is my test box. The bad news is when I can get this fixed I'm going to give it to someone in need of a netbook to surf, check mail, and not have to worry about upgrading the OS every 6-months

For some reason, I forget why, a lot of the wifi drivers were removed from kernel 3.2, which is the one in update pack 4.
Dell XPS 15 l502x - Debian Testing 64-bit NetInst Xfce, SolydX 64-bit Debian Testing, SolydK 64-bit SolydXK Testing

Good question. Problem is two-fold for me:

1. I don't know
2. I don't know how to find out:(

:shock: Is there a list of removed drivers, or at least a news post/mailing list post regarding that somewhere?

i see we have in this topic several issues (and maybe not related, unless for the fact that they arise with UP4)

we should know why/how all these pkgs failed (was an issue during the update process? or caused by your modifications as stated above?)
but obviously some of the problems you are facing pos-UP4 are related with those fails (gdm3< your issue n1, network-manager-gnome < issue n2 and probably 3)

you have the headers installed? i didn't try with this new 3.2 kernel yet but broadcom was always building ok at least until 3.1 (last i checked)
Edit: just finish the build now following this howto (the same i always use) viewtopic.php?f=197&t=57056

you always had a standard install or had you "mess" with the sources.list (and recently?) i ask this because you shouldn't be running those kernel v. in UP4 UP4 was frozen in the 20th of march but the kernel v. you have installed migrated to testing on the 23rd (3.2.12-1) and the one i have (and i believe everybody else migrated on the 12th (3.2.9-1)
only this per-se is not a biggy (broadcom should build as well against the 12-1 kernel) but what else did you pull from outside UP4 or better yet what did you not? because this way it looks like a mixed system (and easier to get these kind of weird bugs)

As I stated early, I'm been trying so many things I'm not sure anymore. Perhaps I should re-install LMDE. Now the question will be can I, or does, automatically upgrade to Service Pack 4 without having to do 3 as well?

at this point you are going to UP4 right away, but if that install can "live" without wireless for a few more days/week(s) the new isos are being tested now viewtopic.php?f=201&t=99220

To Clarify...

I have a laptop docked (wired nic) and tried wifi (iflwifi driver) seems to work correctly.
have other computers (waiting on ISOs) that use wifi tho.

Question 'kernel modules may have to be rebuilt? because of regressions/omissions in current kernel. Correct?

P.S. like to read to keep ahead of future problems :P

Thanks again:

My Realtek 8188CE wireless stopped working with UP4 and I couldn't reinstall the drivers. I installed the Liquorix Kernel and was able to install the drivers and get wireless back. (I'm also having trouble with my printer and sound, but I'll save those for another topic)

I want to able to have this box ready not later than Friday afternoon in order to give to someone who need a netbook. To do that I'll install the current and uprade to 4. If I knew the new iso will be out by Saturday at the lastedst, I could push it back a day.

I am also having issues with the broadcom driver with UP4 which worked before my update. Below is my output of your suggested command:

I am currently running the 3.2.0-2-686-pae kernel.

apt-get install build-essential

build-essential is already the newest version.

Done!

Package broadcom-sta-source is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

The instructions suggested Microsoft Vista or better, so I installed Linux.

@antiquexray, as you can see in those links the tests are going pretty fast, but nobody can assure you that by friday we'll have a rc out to test (and install). if you can wait a couple days more to see how it goes and then make a decision, better.

@Matt267, troubles with realtek is a bit strange;
can you give us the output of
Code: Select all
inxi -N
(capital N)
firmware-realtek should give support for that driver
This package contains the binary firmware for some Ethernet adapters with
the RTL8111/RTL8168 chips supported by the r8169 driver; and wireless
network cards with the RTL8188, RTL8192 and RTL8712 chips supported by the
r8192_pci, r8192s_usb, r8712u, rtl8192ce, rtl8192cu, rtl8192de and
rtl8192se drivers.

Contents:
* Realtek RTL8192E boot code (RTL8192E/boot.img)
* Realtek RTL8192E init data (RTL8192E/data.img)
* Realtek RTL8192E main code (RTL8192E/main.img)
* Realtek RTL8192SU firmware, version 902B (RTL8192SU/rtl8192sfw.bin)
* Realtek RTL8105E-1 firmware (rtl_nic/rtl8105e-1.fw)
* Realtek RTL8111D-1/RTL8168D-1 firmware (rtl_nic/rtl8168d-1.fw)
* Realtek RTL8111D-2/RTL8168D-2 firmware (rtl_nic/rtl8168d-2.fw)
* Realtek RTL8168E-1 firmware (rtl_nic/rtl8168e-1.fw)
* Realtek RTL8168E-2 firmware (rtl_nic/rtl8168e-2.fw)
* Realtek RTL8168E-3 firmware, version 0.0.3 (rtl_nic/rtl8168e-3.fw)
* Realtek RTL8168F-1 firmware, version 0.0.3 (rtl_nic/rtl8168f-1.fw)
* Realtek RTL8168F-2 firmware, version 0.0.3 (rtl_nic/rtl8168f-2.fw)
* Realtek RTL8192CE/RTL8188CE firmware (rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin)
* Realtek RTL8192CU/RTL8188CU firmware (rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin)
* Realtek RTL8192DE firmware (rtlwifi/rtl8192defw.bin)
* Realtek RTL8192SE/RTL8191SE firmware (rtlwifi/rtl8192sefw.bin)
* Realtek RTL8192SU/RTL8712U firmware, version 2.6.6 (rtlwifi/rtl8712u.bin)

can you try
Code: Select all
apt install firmware-realtek

@J.Jay,
a new kernel might drop support for some modules (very rare) and add for others (this happens a lot more), what we see here regarding broadcom is different, because it's one of the few (maybe afaik the only) wireless driver that needs rebuilding against every new kernel.
