Update KDE to current without upgrading distro

Postby infamshxr on Tue Mar 27, 2012 7:20 pm

Hey, so I 've been Googling left and right and can't find the answer I'm looking for here. I want to update KDE to the current stable version, but I don't want to upgrade Mint. I am running Mint 10 currently, running KDE 4.6.2. I'm sure there has to be some way to enter in the repos and run a command in the terminal.

Am I wrong? Or am I just not finding the answer?

Some simple steps would be great. Thanks in advance.

If you have a look at the page this link takes you too, you can do what you want by including Kubuntu-ppa Backports as a repository.
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
do this then run the Update Manager and you will see KDE 4.8 available.

I thought I had done that already, but I'll give it another try. If I do have it currently, should I delete it and redo it?

If you look at etc/apt/sources.list.d, you should see kubuntu-ppa-backports-oneiric.list. If it is there it should work, but if it does not, yes delete it and try again.

i deleted both the entry listed in the repo in synaptic and in sources.list.d and re-added the kubuntu backports but it just added as the maverick repo, which will only give me kde 4.6. Am I doing something wrong?

Support for 10.10 “Maverick Meerkat” ended on Tuesday and I see this notice, WARNING: all packages have been deleted from this repository, at the page for kubuntu backports for Maverick. It may be time to consider installing Mint KDE 12 or 13. when it is released.

Maybe that's why... I was kinda avoiding installing a newer version since I'll lose all my customization settings. Oh well lol I guess I'll just stay with 4.6 til something so significant and cool is upgraded that really makes me wanna upgrade. You know what they say, don't fix what's not broken.

Have a read of this review of KDE 4.8. KDE 4.8 changes are quite significant and cool.

Ugh... you just had to. Lol I had forgotten the features of 4.8 for the most part. Well, so how would I go about upgrading to mint 12 without losing my settings for stuff?

I always do a fresh install and try to remember my settings, but this tutorial covers the options available and ways to back up data and the apps you have installed.
