[Solved] Gnome starts instead of Cinnamon

Postby jcbrinfo on Mon Apr 09, 2012 10:50 am

Hi everybody,
I upgraded my system and I installed the "cinnamon". But, when I choose the "Cinnamon" desktop at log in, I get Gnome 3 instead. How can I get Cinnamon?

Thank you in advance.

Hi, have you made any config in the Cinnamon setting?
At first I logged on Gnome 3 (Cinnamon was not proposed), the after using the Cinnamon setting, and deciding few things it appears in the logging options.
It works normally now.

Hi

When you log in are you getting full gnome3 or is it in fallback mode?

From what I understand (& I have seen with 1 of my own systems) if the graphics card dosn't support / dosn't have the drivers for the 3d effects needed to run Cinnamon it will instead drop you into Gnome fallback mode
I've fixed Windows, tried running with Jackalopes, fought Koalas & now, I'm addicted to Mints

I updated another computer (with the same graphic card) yesterday and I had no problem. And, yes, it may be the fallback mode because when I load Gnome 3 on both computers, I have two different interfaces.

Note : All my computers have a Intel chip (cheap) as a graphic card.

There are many various Intel chips, some are bad, some are worse :D so that doesn't explain the problem.

BTW, I stumbled upon a couple of hints - this and this - about getting explanations on why Gnome Shell (or Cinnamon) refuses to start. You only need to correct the path - in Debian it's
Code: Select all
/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated

To be honest, I doubt it will yield something more detailed than "no 3D support", but you can at least try. :)

Result:
Code: Select all
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

Hi, you may check in synaptic and install (or re-install) canberra-session-manager. it should help.
This missing module seems frequent.

Installed "libcanberra-gtk3-module" and reinstalled "libcanberra-gtk-module". Now:
[*]/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated shows nothing.[/*]
[*]The "pop-up" messages of Linux Mint are shown entirely. (It was not the case before.)[/*]
[*]Even after killing X (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace), I can't get the Cinnamon desktop yet.[/*]

You mean the notifications? Do you have notification-daemon installed?

Code: Select all
jcbrinfo@***:~$ inxi -Gx

jcbrinfo@***:~$ glxgears

Minor opcode of failed request:  19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request:  12
Current serial number in output stream:  12

Weird. glxgears worked before the update...

Edit: After uninstalling all flgrx packages, GLX and Cinnamon work.
