What's happened to Notifications?

What's happened to the wonderful white text on black Notifications that were in Linux Mint before updating to UP4?

Mow I get no on-screen notification of network connection, or file downloads or anything.
I liked and now miss there Notifications!
How do I get them back?

Hi, Myself. Are you using MATE? I first noticed that there was a problem with notifications when plugging and unplugging my AC adapter from my laptop, as the battery notifications intrusively were showing up in message boxes in the very middle of the screen.

Installing mate-notification-daemon fixed that problem. You can change the appearance of the notifications--e.g., to white text on black background--as well as the location of the notifications by going (if you're using menubar) to "Popup Notifications" in the System tab (I forget if it's under Preferences or Settings--I'm at work).

This did not fix the lack of notifications regarding print jobs on my LMDE UP4 MATE system, though. Currently I can print, but I am having to do without any print-related notifications or print manager applet in my notification area.

Using Xfce not Mate. I do recall seeing Mate files being installed during the upgrade.
Have searched again for "Popup Notifications" on the System tab under Preferences or Settings, etc., but there is nothing. I never expected the programmers would remove this when providing an upgrade.

I'm sorry, but my experience with Xfce is extremely limited. I've only ever seriously used Gnome2.

Yes, I am also very surprised at the loss of notifications with UP4. I'm still at a loss as to how to get the print-related notifications back.

Do you have notification-daemon installed?
Maybe you have to manually run it with:
/usr/lib/notification-daemon/notification-daemon

Upgrade must have removed it. Seems a very weird thing to be allowed to happen since UP4 was so extensively tested.

I guess "notification" isn't a welcome word anymore. It reminds of Windows I guess and you have to use applets and panels instead.

Have you installed notification-daemon?

I am also running XFCE and I recently upgraded to UP4.
This worked for me:

sudo apt-get install xfce4-notifyd

You will see the effect only after rebooting.

No need to reboot as it started working immediately.
