UP4 kernel version ?

Postby jan_goyvaerts on Thu Apr 12, 2012 7:15 am

According to the UP4 release notes the kernel should have been upgraded to 3.2. Uname however reports 3.0.0.
Code: Select all
Linux home 3.0.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jul 24 02:24:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Did my update went wrong or is UP4 still on 3.0.0 ?

I'm even the one who initiated that thread. But I thought to be in the clear now. :-)

The update can't connect to certain urls in packages.linuxmint.com/.... Maybe that's the problem ?

if you can't get a clean output in the apt update you shouldn't even try to dist-upgrade (the chances of break your system are huge) and of course if apt can't reach the server it can't pull the newer pkgs in.

apparently these server problems should be solved by now (looks like not for all)

no problem :D i see, usually the "failed to fetch" can be dangerous but in your situation it's only failing translations, so i don't think it will break anything and has nothing to do with this issue.

i really have to leave (so i hope others will pick this) but can you post the output of
Code: Select all
dpkg --list | egrep '(linux-image*)|(linux-headers*)'
(probably you're just missing the headers for the new kernel and all the rest is fine)

No problem, this can wait. I'm greatly appreciating your help. And hopefully it helps other users of LMDE too.

Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --list | egrep '(linux-image*)|(linux-headers*)'

I'm not sure of what I'm looking to, but it looks like something 3.2-ish is there already. Maybe Grub failed to add the entry ?

Anyway, it's all working. So, nothing urgent here. It's just that I saw the release notes. :-)

An obvious question : Did you reboot the machine and the grub menu list did not have the entry of the 3.2 kernel?

If the menu items were missing, as su try
Code: Select all
update-grub

Look at the output to check whether the required kernel has been found. Or you can open the file /boot/grub/grub.cfg in an editor of your choice to check the same.

If you have multiple linuxen on your box and grub has been installed by another os (not lmde), that can also be a reason for not seeing the entry on the grub menu when you boot the machine. To rule out that possibility, from lmde, do this

Code: Select all
sudo update-grub
sudo grub-install /dev/sda

Hope that gives you some pointers to solve the problem.

Regards.

[SOLVED] UP4 kernel version ?

Postby jan_goyvaerts on Thu Apr 12, 2012 9:10 am

That helped ! The 3.2.0 entry has been added to the Grub boot menu.

However, the OS booted to the prompt. Looks like the reported NVidia problem. Running the following command & rebooting seems to work.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-kernel-dkms

Looks like I'm back in business - for now. :-p

MANY thanks indeed for helping me out that fast ! :D
