Can someone explain to me why LMDE is still using, on the RC, Xfce4.6.

Debian testing has been using 4.8, much improved over 4.6 for a long time (I think it is about a year now).

LMDE-xfce uses the same xfce v. testing uses, before these statements you could just grab the RC and check it.

Re: Linux Mint Debian 201204 RC (MATE/Cinnamon & Xfce) relea

Post by dancer_69 »

I just tried to install this new version(I'm writing from live session), but I cannot use a different disk for home partition.
I have the home and swap partitions on another disk, but live installer force me to choose only one disk for installation.
I've search the net and found that this bug exists from 2010, and there was a "fix released" announcement.
But I don't see a fix on this live installer.
Is there something I'm missing?

Installed both MATE and XFCE versions of the RC as guests in VirtualBox 4.1.12. Having a few issues.

in Mate despite changing the desktop settings, unchecking the icons on the desktop, they are still there. Also Gnome compositing doesn't seem to work.

Cinnamon occasionally blanks out and then I have no window borders. I assume that means the WM crashed.

I haven't played with XFCE yet although It boots to the desktop.

edit: so far XFCE seems fine :)

re-edit: had to install mateconf-editor to change the desktop and compositing. all is well now. :D

Where are the Mint Gnome Shell Extensions?
It is great the Mint held off on the latest update until MATE and Cinnamon where ready, but the Mint Gnome Shell Extensions should have been included as well.
Can someone post instructions on how to add the Mint Gnome Shell Extensions to LMDE?
I searched in both Software Manager and Synaptic for the packages and got no results.

Hi

UP4 Partial report

Unwillingly, ( I am a Latest guy) I did a little bit of testing because I installed yesterday LMDE 64 bits, mainly for Cinnamon.
This is not a complete report but the points I have seen. All in all, it's a satisfactory RC.

- Looking for Wine. Found a suitable repository, working well, but I still do not have a Mint Menu, only the Wine applications in others. Previously I went for Wine 1.5.0 unstable but they did not provide me with MSTT fonts and I cancelled.
This is the one I use.
deb http://www.lamaresh.net/apt squeeze main

Java version seems a bit old. Version is 1.6.0. 24, current is 31

Applets:
gpaste daemon is not working and difficult to install (no PPA thanks). I had to take clipit.
Recent Documents Icon is the old ugly violet one, not the nice symbolic.

On starting, the first 10 seconds are a little frightening. LMDE spits a lot of text... This should be avoided. After that, he settles quietly and starts up quickly enough.

I was missing in Nautilus the submenu "extract here" and had to go for file-roller.

Experimented some freezes and applets freeze, but I was doing non ordinary tasks. I think it will cool down soon.

I have seen a panel for "Color space management" but no way to use it. Why do we have it? To cry on it?

I had to comeback to Mate to select startup applications and services. Did not find where to do it on Cinnamon.

I have two main menus but none of the two takes care of Wine.

I have still to find where to tune the brightness for my NVIDIA Toshiba.

Yeah, couldn't find that too. Must be some plugin which must be installed... or not?
roger64 wrote:I had to comeback to Mate to select startup applications and services. Did not find where to do it on Cinnamon.
Its name is gnome-session-properties, and it's indeed missing from the menu.

BTW, Cinnamon menu editor is totally unusable right after the installation because of... gnome-desktop-item-edit missing
And you won't know about that unless you:
1) guess the menu editor name (I ran "ps aux | grep menu" in the terminal). It turned out to be cinnamon-menu-editor;
2) run it from the terminal to see all the hidden errors;
3) finally get some angry messages from Python.

And where do you think that gnome-desktop-item-edit hides?
In the gnome-panel package!
Which has the following dependencies:

Code: Select all

  alacarte gnome-applets gnome-applets-data gnome-contacts gnome-panel-data gnome-session gnome-session-fallback gnome-shell
  gnome-shell-common gnome-system-monitor
Needless to say that I refused to install all that just to have a tiny utility for editing menu items. :)

Just file-roller and restart.

Thanks

Well, I did a reinstall of Cinnamon and got the whole package, with Gnome Shell, fallback and so on and I now have some entries more to choose for session start.

Cinnamon-menu-editor provides me with a Wine menu but it seems lie there is nothing to put inside. :D

LMDE-xfce uses the same xfce v. testing uses, before these statements you could just grab the RC and check it.
I actually got that information by booting to a newly downloaded and burned RC.

When the Xfce panel looked like the older version I went to the menu and clicked on "About Xfce". This seemed pretty straight forward to me and a good way to find out what version LMDE RC thought it was running.

It looked like 4.6, acts like 4.6 and claims it is 4.6. That is the reason I asked.

It is also the reason that, with partitions set up for it, I did not bother to install it.

How do I change the window manager in MATE? I much prefer to use a tiling window manager, but I can’t get one to start (correctly) by default. I have installed dwm, awesome, and bluetile. I have had no success with dwm or awesome. Bluetile works perfectly if I start it from the command line once MATE is running, but if I have it run as a startup application then the mouse is constantly replaced by a hamster wheel, which is quite annoying. It also adds the gnome+bluetile option at the login screen, but won’t start. It would be awesome if there was a MATE+bluetile option. I really just want to know where/what I need to edit ( in gnome2 it was ~/.gnomerc ) to change the default window manager?

It is not a big deal to just start bluetile from the command line every time I log in, but this obviously is not the best way to do it. Also I would really prefer to use dwm or awesome.

Oh. Thanks. Haven't even thought of that - got used to systems where it's already installed :)

Hi, Everyone. I installed LMDE RC in virtualbox 4.12. I have been a Mint user Since "10" . It has become my main desktop environment and I love it. I must say that I am very disappointed thus far with the Debian RC addition.
Cinnamon, Which I use almost exclusively in my Mint 12 partition, is beautifully done and is only getting better, does not work well in the LMDE RC. It freezes up and is just awful. the menu icon is not working. I do have 3D enabled in the V.B.
My machine is a Lenovo desktop with 4gb of ram and Pentium dual core processor. It also has an intel G41 graphics card. I'm sure these issues will be worked out before the full release. I just wanted you to be aware of my issues.
Thank you and keep up the good work.

There are some issues with VirtualBox and Cinnamon. I think it's more a VB issue. I have both LMDE and LM12 installed as guests and Cinnamon is an issue with both. iMac i7 12GB.
