Wifi and Hibernate not working

Postby Dannyboy204787 on Thu Apr 12, 2012 4:19 pm

Hello,

I just updated my LMDE to the Update Package 4. I'm not only missing my Cinnamon desktop, but the wifi is also extremely slow. My Notebook has an Intel 5100 chip, and it worked great before this update. Hibernating does also not work anymore, when closing the screen.

Can anyone give me some advice?

I guess you had Cinnamon before. Maybe you could try reinstalling it.

For hibernation you could try in terminal:
Code: Select all
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action 'hibernate'
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-battery-action 'hibernate'
(Or if you want a GUI use dconf-editor and navigate there.)

Thanks, hibernate and wake up works again. By the way faster than with a comparable Apple product. ;-)
However, the battery status is displayed twice, if you hover or click the battery icon with the mouse.

The desktop also works as usual after installing mate and cinnamon.

The wifi still is not working after several attempts with iwconfig wlan0. The rate is over 54M and the frequency over 2.400G as they used to be. They cannot be changed with the iwconfig tool. By disconnecting the wifi it is completely broken. I think, the wifi module is unloaded, and I do not manage to get it working unless I reboot.

Regards,

danny

Have you tried using another encryption?

No, but honestly I would rather have no wifi than WEP.

So, you think, it is not a problem with the iwlwifi driver?

I have no idea. I just read it could also be a kernel or module problem ...
Do you have others kernels installed?

Can you boot from Grub into them and try if it works there?

I have already done that. It was not working as well.

Could it be some IPv6 issues? I deactivated the DNS server adresses with IPv6 and it is a bit faster now, but still very slow. Ping times to google are from 20 to 2000 ms.

I reread:

Well, what shows the command
Code: Select all
modprobe iwlwifi

Here someone else has also a problem using the same module: viewtopic.php?f=198&t=99488

Shouldn't IPv6 be restricted anyway? If it helps than maybe you're onto something.

Well, that guy even lives in the same apartment.

I tried to use modprobe, but I didn't work then. Now, after some days, it is possible to just reconnect via wifi by using the panel as usual. Still, it is very slow, but in principle working. I'm a bit puzzled here.

I think, I found the culprit. I deactivated the WPS function of my router, which I should have done much earlier because of security issues with this "protocol". However, now the wifi is working again at full speed and without interrupts.

Thanks. Without the Wi-Fi Protected Setup it is working well now. So, I don't actually know if there is a bug in my easybox router or LMDE. At least the old LMDE version could handle it without problems. However, I wouldn't use WEP as sometimes recommended in case of issues with wifi.
