Internet Connection Sharing. Yeah, I said it.

Okay, I have done MANY searches, which have led me to Ubuntu tutorials, which DO NOT seem to apply to my UI in Mint 12 (Lisa). The upshot is this:

I have a computer which gets internet from the ISP wirelessly. That computer has an RJ-45 jack, which I would like to plug into the WAN port on my wireless router, to beam throughout the house, wirelessly. It's a WRT54-GL, flashed with the latest and greatest DD-WRT (24 sp2 or something). WHAT do I have to DO to get the MINT box to put out to the internet to that damn thing? I'm going nuts here, and I'm pointed to Ubuntu tutorials, which do not seem to apply, exactly.

Does anyone have a tutorial for this scenario? I'm SURE I'm just missing one stupid point, but I won't take offense to be called out on it, if it works! :-)

TIA!

Sorry, I didn't mention that the computer getting the internet from the ISP is the LinuxMint box, wirelessly. It has two GB LANs, which should make no difference, really. But there it is, anyway.

Thank you, Wayne128! I don't know how to implement what you're talking about. I'm looking for LinuxMint settings. I could put Win7 on that box and just change the default 137dot subnet to something else, but I'm trying to do something better. I caught no advice in your post, really!

This is a fast answer without looking up references, but hopefully will be helpful somewhat...

It sounds like you will need to set your machine up to act like a router.

You can do this with iptables, but there are also probably front end tools that will allow you to configure it a little easier but you will still have to learn stuff about networking and NAT if you aren't familiar with that.

Basically you will set up the network card on your machine that will plug into your wireless routers WAN port on a private network. You will then need to configure that network interface to route incoming packets through it's wireless interface that is connected to the internet. The NAT(Network Address Translation) configuration will have to be done to tell that machine that packets coming from the interface that is plugged into the wireless router going to a location on the internet need to be altered to look like they are coming from your machines interface that is connected to the internet. Then packets coming back from the internet that are responses will get their destination address rewritten to go back to the wireless router. The wireless router should handle all the NAT stuff for the machines that connect to it. I will go google around to see if I can find you some good resources to walk you through that in the next ten or fifteen minutes, but if I don't post back with anything soon then you can probably do that as good or better than I could.

Good luck to you and let us know how it turns out. It would also be a nice idea if you could document what you end up doing so that other people can use your post as a resource later

Well, the bad news is that you will probably have to learn a lot more than you ever wanted to about IP networking to make this fly. The good news is it won't hurt you to be exposed to that stuff. I looked through the packages listed by searching for iptables and didn't see anything listed that would be a great front end option for you to get your stuff configured.

Here are two places that might be helpful examples for you

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-as- ... e-etc.html
http://www.stanford.edu/~fenn/linux/

For info on iptables in general you can find lots of things I'm sure, but you might want to start here:
file:///usr/share/doc/iptables/html/

If that link doesn't work for you I will be very surprised, but you will then need to install iptables

> "sudo apt-get install iptables"

Then go to that link. Again best wishes, and let us know how it turns out and if you have any problems moving forward from here

Well, it bums me out, more than you could know, that I installed (and PAID FOR, of COURSE!) Windows 7 on that box, and I now have the internet connection that I was looking for. It still dual-boots with Mint, if that means anything.
