Same problem here: Did the full upgrade and everything went well.

At first sight, the new interface looked nice (Is this what you call Cinnamon?), but I soon realised its drawbacks, especially having to click "Activities" before I can see which windows are open. Also some notifications I set up (such as SysMon graph bars) have disappeared.

I am not too familiar with the technical stuff, but I understand Gnome2 has been abandoned? And until Gnome3 becomes available, something called Gnome Shell can be used? What is Mate? How can I install this?

Sorry for sounding so ignorant about these things...

I found out when you logout that is a option underneath that you can select to log into GNOM
but i still dont like it
I deleted my pc and reinstall LDME 2.6, i also won't update untill GNOME 3 comes out then
I love Mint and have been using it for the last 4 years, but this new Mate I dislike, I might have to switch to something else or start liking KDE

You can get a menu bar back at the bottom of the page by installing cinnamon in the synaptic package manager but I have found the launchers are not working in 64 bit LMDE
At present I have no launching of Firefox, Terminal or files from the lower control panel also I cant switch between open applications in that part of the control bar once they are running from launching elswhere.
Any bright ideas on how to get these bar aplets working anyone?

I should have said once you install cinnamon you have to choose it from the dropdown list at login. Good luck.
I suspect we are all going to need it to learn all these new choices

Ah, I missed the drop down on the login screen. At least I have a task bar and start button now, but not as good as it used to be.

Many thanks.

A fork ("variation") of Gnome 2 www.mate-desktop.org
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment

The Gnome Shell is part of Gnome 3. So it's one and the same.

What you need is Cinnamon Settings (cinnamon-settings).
What you want is in Panel and Applets (in Panel tick Panel Edit Mode to set it up).
What you have to activate in Applets is Panel Launchers (then you should be able to Add lauchers with a right-click on the applet)
And also activate Cinnamon Window List.
