Gnome 3 freaks out

Gnome 3 freaks out

Postby PHP_Coder on Thu Apr 12, 2012 9:58 pm

I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets this, but I have yet to find an answer on resolving it.

First off I will state that I do have an ATI graphic card and that I installed the newest driver from ATI.

the ui works but at random, my window and taskbarsa are gone, i tried to restart the shell from the terminal buyt i get this nice message:

(gnome-shell:8938): Gdk-WARNING **: The program 'gnome-shell' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'GLXBadRenderRequest'.
(Details: serial 181 error_code 153 request_code 137 minor_code 1)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

even worse, I can't get Gnome 3 to work at all now or even cinnimon. I am in Gnome Classic, which will do until i get things working again (but must admit I like Gnome 3 whens its not dying on me, honest)

am I screwed or is there a way to save myself from reinstalling mint linux?

hope someone can help me, I hope more im portantly ATI or Gnome resolves this as they got great potiential here (I'm a long time Gnome user)

Thanks.

well glad i backed up my stuff, thing wouldn't boot back up after upgrading to gnome 3.4 :(

I reinstalled mint and has not installed or activated any drivers, i downloaded the latest ATI driver, question is, should I install it?

all else fails, I'm switching to Debian, but really like mint, so hoping I can get this working without issue :)'

Thanks

This 'may' have been the problem with your installation. If you search these and the ubuntu forums you will find many threads about issues with ATI/AMD cards in mint 12/ubuntu 11.10. It sounds as if the driver was not correctly installed or configured before. The general consensus seems to be installing the latest driver directly from AMD, which I believe is currently 12.2.

well i think you may be right :)

I have yet to encounter this bug :D *knock on wood*

when i first installed int, i used the driver from repo, and then i was told not to and installed the driver from ati, but i dont think i uninstalled the previous driver which might have been the problem as this round i just installed the driver from ATI, no problems.

I'll post back if I experience this issue again :)

thanks
