[Solved] Really Newbie Questions!

Postby WhatUsernameIsFree? on Sat Apr 14, 2012 7:42 am

Hi,

Just upgraded to the new version of LMDE/Gnome and have a few questions on how to use it? How do I shutdown the computer? I can log out and suspend, but not sure how to shut it down? Secondly, how do I get rid of the speech bubble next to my name? Finally how do I get rid of the accessibility icon, as I never use it?

Thanks! :)

Press the Alt key to temporarily change the shutdown options to something sensible, then see the answer below for a permanent fix.

Speech bubble? I don't know, I haven't got one. It might be because I have declared myself 'Unavailable' in the menu and also switched off notifications, I don't know.

Accessibility icon (and an awful lot more) you need to go to https://extensions.gnome.org/?page=1

The two extensions that do what you want are the first two on page 1, but with the help of that site you can turn gnome-shell into virtually anything you want.

Have fun!

Click on your name on the top right, press and hold the alt key and Suspend changes to Power Off...
Click that and Cancel Restart or Power Off dialogue box appears.

This amazingly daft shutdown menu behavior has luckily been changed to something sane in the Gnome 3.4 version of Gnome Shell.
Thank you for this thread. That’s all I can say. You most definitely have made this forum into something special. You clearly know what you are doing, you’ve covered so many bases. Thanks!

Sorry, I'll try clarify the speech bubble thing.

My name, if I click on it, it says I'm unavailable. For what am I unavailable? Or available for that matter? Do I need to be available? Can I not just get rid of being available or unavailable?

Thanks :)

instant messaging service is handled there
http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/3.2/
Messaging Built In

You no longer have to open a separate application to sign in to chat and messaging services. In 3.2, GNOME will do it for you.

Change available or unavailable status quickly using the user menu at the top-right hand corner of the screen.
Easily approve or reject new buddy requests, audio/video calls, and file transfers.
Get notified in case there is a connection problem with a chat or messaging service.

Ok, that makes sense.

Finally (I promise) can I remove that since I don't use instant messaging applications (I use my phone for that)? I can't see anything on Gnome Extentions, but surely not everyone has a use for instant messaging applications so can remove it?

Secondly how can I add the full date and seconds to the clock? It feels a little Windows like, removed half of the customisation factors.

Thanks :)

if you want to remove the name+bubble from the panel, this will do https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/156/quit-button/
(regarding the instant messaging integration, you better just not set any account in empathy and leave the status as unavailable) because if you try to remove empathy it removes also gnome-core
Code: Select all
amadeu@amadeu ~ $ sudo apt-get -s remove empathy
[sudo] password for amadeu:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  xdg-user-dirs-gtk libkeybinder0 mate-image-viewer python-keybinder
  libglew1.6 liborbit2-dev gir1.2-sushi-1.0 mint-backgrounds-debian
  libsushi-1.0-0 libidl-dev libtracker-sparql-0.12-0 orbit2
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  empathy gnome-core
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 2 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Remv gnome-core [1:3.0+7]
Remv empathy [3.2.2-1+b1]
now, gnome-core is just a meta-pkg, but can be useful in future upgrades

regarding the time, try gnome-tweak-tool (advanced settings) and under the tab shell look for the settings for clock

Code: Select all
gnome-tweak-tool: command not found

After I actually installed it it worked. I thought the extension did install it.

since you're at it, you can install some extensions from the repo (it will save some time)
Code: Select all
apt install gnome-tweak-tool gnome-shell-extensions

and now have fun
as viking said earlier
you can turn gnome-shell into virtually anything you want.

Thank you! But 12 pages!? ;) Maybe if MATE fails. Or should I say "when"?

unfortunately not  the tweaks we see in fedora regarding this are specific to the distro.
this is gnome-shell 3.4 running in precise without any modification whatsoever (gnome-tweak-tool is not even installed) and the suspend/ press Alt turns Power Off is still here

Ah, OK, only in fedora then! I can't believe they don't just change that madness. Press the alt key in the open user menu to view shutdown options, it's just such an inexplicably bad idea :D

if i still remember correctly the arguments behind this rationale, they believe that this behaviour is greener  (as in saving more energy) and nowadays the suspend issues are fixed in linux   so there's no reason not to use it.
