to terminate ping test,
use ctrl-c
try it and see that it gives you a summary of all data.

note:
I just put in an external wireless adapter in the Mint 12 and wireless works. Excellent plug and play, by the way. Thinking I'm right and it's the laptop. Still, any ideas or tests, I'm willing to listen. Anyone know if running another os, voids hardware warranty?

now I think you can plug in external wireless card, as it is plug and play, you should get wireless with it.
do ping test and traceroute.
if all is well, then HP wireless card....well
to confirm, just install win7 to HP and see what happen. wireless should work out of the box with win7.

Hmmmm. Wayne,
I put in an external wireless card and pinged.

PING 192.168.1.254 (192.168.1.254) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.254: icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=1.88 ms

Then when I try and connect to post results. I can't connect. With external wireless card that works on every other computer in the house. I get traceroute results as follows -

traceroute http://www.yahoo.com
traceroute to http://www.yahoo.com (209.191.122.70), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

I haven't a clue what's happening! The other wireless card I used at first disappeared. But this one I'm using had worked once before. (Thanks for the ctrl-c, by the way) I think what makes this more complicated is that THIS computer has three differences from the rest of the computers in the house that work on the modem. #1 - runs Mint 12 (The rest run Mint 9) #2 - Has n-band wireless card (the rest have b or g) #3 - Uses Chrome (the rest use Firefox). On this computer I've tried using Epiphany with the same result so I don't think it's the browser.

ping result you showed only ping to your router ip.

you should try ping ISP ip, ping yahoo.com and google.com to check that wireless indeed get connected to website via ISP

WAYNE! Interesting result. I put in a Mint 9 LXDE Live CD, disconnected the eth0 and removed the external wireless card. So, the computer was only running with the internal wireless card. I was able to go to speedtest.net and run the tests easily. Results -
Ping 44ms
Download speed 4.43Mb
Upload speed .80Mb
That's the first time the tests have completed and the results are at least to me, in the ballpark. It almost seems to me HP was right and it's in the software (Mint 12). I still don't understand but seems that way.
***Note - I went to the cyber cafe across the street. With the computer the same as it is in my house, the wireless connection was noticeably faster but still not as fast as it was before with the old modem. I still don't feel any closer to an answer but suspect I'm making progress.

Ran another ping test -

What strikes me as odd is, I can do this wireless ping test (which seems to work) but I can't post the results because the connection lags so much.

I'm gonna wait until I mark this as solved. As mentioned in another post, I changed the modem's 'Interface' from b/g/n to b/g and it seems to work much faster. It's as if there's a problem in the software of something when the 'n' option is selected. I'll check back later.

Marked as solved. Ran another speedtest.net using everything originally set. Results -
ping 40ms
download speed 4.99Mb
upload speed .80Mb
As I mentioned the problem seems to be with n wireless cards and the 'interface' set on the modem/router. It took me a week but I got it.
