[Solved] Desktop Upgraded: Graphics really messed up.

Postby WhatUsernameIsFree? on Sat Apr 14, 2012 10:06 am

Hi all,

I've upgraded my desktop computer through the Mint Updater and everything boots fine. It no longer automatically logs me in, which is fine, but after I log in all the graphics are messed up. There's a low resolution rather than the nice high one before, the letters in the print are unreadable and there are things left all over the screen.

Unfortunately, I can't get Dropbox to install, so I can't upload a picture, but if I can work it out, I'll post one up which might help.

Any ideas just to get my computer working for now? Any way to 'roll back' to the old version of Gnome?

These two links are the sort of issue I'm facing.

Thanks for any help. :)

There are other ways to upload a picture. ;)

Can you log into another session/desktop environment? At Login choose from the drop down menu left.

Ahh! Nice one. Gnome Classic works fine. How can I make it so this is the system default with auto-login enabled?

Thanks

for autologin chech this (specially Gene's answer) viewtopic.php?f=199&t=98944&p=563862#p563600

the rest looks like a graphics card issue, post the output of
Code: Select all
inxi -Gx

GLX Renderer Gallium 0.4
you are not using the proprietary nvidia drivers, this way you have enough rendering capability for gnome-classic or for mate, but not for cinnamon or gnome-shell

I'm really sorry, but I didn't understand any of that. Basically, just stick to Gnome classic? :)

 it's ok, my fault:
- gnome-shell and cinnamon demand good 3D acceleration and for that you need to have the proprietary drivers installed,
- which you don't, compare your output with this
zerozero@zerozero-G41MT-D3:~$ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA G92 [GeForce GTS 250] bus-ID: 01:00.0
X.Org 1.11.3 drivers nvidia unloaded: nouveau,vesa,fbdev Resolution 1440x900@51.0hz
GLX Renderer GeForce GTS 250/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version 3.3.0 NVIDIA 295.40 Direct Rendering Yes

- so unless you want to mess with manual driver installation (it's not hard, but has a risk to it), yes you have to go for gnome-classic or even better try mate
Code: Select all
apt install mate-desktop-environment
logout and login to mate

My output:
Code: Select all
~ $ inxi -Gx
Graphics:  Card nVidia C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] X.Org 1.11.4 Res: 1280x960
GLX Renderer Gallium 0.4 on NV4C GLX Version 2.1 Mesa 7.11.2 Direct Rendering Yes

:? I can use Gnome 3 and Cinnamon just fine ... But Gnome Classic not anymore! ;)
