Hi from Hove England

Postby matt77 on Wed Apr 11, 2012 8:05 pm

Hi i've just upgraded my software to Mint 12 and am pleased although struggling with my Wifi. Have just written a message on this site and saved it to 'drafts' but can't seem to find out where the drafts folder is located can anyone help ? I find it very odd that the folder no longer exists and have provided information about my comp which is Fujitsu-Amilo Li1718i i'm using an Atheros Ar242x/Ar542x wireless network adapter + realtek Rtl 8139/8139....ethernet controller. Theres also a mention of a host bridge which i've never seen before ---- Ati inc Device 5a31(rev 01) ???
My wifi was working from day 1 with Ubuntu 10.10 then it recently failed so i've moved to mint 12 hoping it would start up immediately.I'm not sure if i have a hardware problem or whether my user permissions are correct ? I've used the acer-wmi commands in the past to use wifi in Karmic.

Hope you can help.

Thanks Matt

Hi matt77, welcome to the Linux Mint forums :D Thanks for joining the forums! If you saved a draft, it should be found here: ucp.php?i=main&mode=drafts For support on your wifi problems, please post a topic here viewforum.php?f=53 and include the output of this command run on the terminal:
Code: Select all
inxi -SNxc 0

Be sure also to check out the Community website (ideas, tutorials, and hardware and software reviews), and the Cinnamon Spices website for adding themes, applets and extensions to Cinnamon (and check out the Cinnamon Extras package , which will install a lot of these for your automatically).

You can also chat in real-time with other Linux Mint users. In the Mint Menu, in the Internet section, start the application XChat IRC. You will automatically get connected to #linuxmint-chat for general chat and #linuxmint-help for support with other Linux Mint users

Think i was too impatient and reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 because it fired up the wireless first time in the past after the CD 64bit install. But strangely it didn't this time.!!!!?????
Theres something weird happening because i reinstalled the OS using the command erase all on the hard drive.
I cannot understand what i have done differently and the strange permissions questions i have now. I noticed that after both installs of mint and Ubuntu over the last two days that my user group is set to custom as default and not as Administrator of which i do not understand.?

Hope someone can figure something out with the wireless.
I've been waiting to avoid Linux Oneric and use the next Ubuntu LTS 12... which is supported for 3 years.I think the new Mint normally arrives a month later of which i may install side by side.

Feel really lost and have been using Ubuntu 10.10 with wireless on for years -- Amilo 1718i computer.
I'll be honest i've wasted days of my life trying to get it back on - why do comp developers and programmers make so many various differentials.
Right now i'm not sure if its the user permissions that are wrong. I'm not sure if the software is working although it shows wireless is switched on but the word Wireless its self is shaded out as a blank (at the top right hand side of the screen) and that seems odd to me as the wireless searches and does not connect.
I have tested the router and it connects to the .... computers and 'other' OS systems which i generally think are poor and slow in comparison to Linux systems.

Feeling VV frustrated. :?

You were right i should have checked back here more often and read the posts.
I found out what happened with the help of my bro who is a comp programmer - he explained that although i could use a non-Ascii character pre-set password with a router and comp with a Windows OS that is not the case with Linux.I wasted days and evenings trying to sort it out and yesterday after installing the other Linux OS i used another type of network manager which pointed to a clue about 'bad passwords' even though i didn't exactly understand what was happening then.If you google on the wiki site -- 'Ascii table' it can help with passwords using Linux hope this info can help someone.

Problem solved thanks. :D :D :D
