Cinnamon weather applet

Postby Mushorwell on Fri Apr 13, 2012 3:41 am

Hi there, I'm new here and am still a noob. Currently I'm running on an updated version of LMDE, was a tough work but somehow finally managed it (Long story cut short). Anyways I'm still getting my feet wet and seeing whether I would use it in the long run. I'm however having trouble setting up the cinnamon weather applet. I installed it through synaptic, it run and basically works retrieving weather from Innsbruk. I am having trouble opening the cinnamon-weather-settings from applet and the notifier gives me the following message:
"Execution of 'cinnamon-weather-settings' failed: Command not found"
I can however run the settings from terminal but despite the changes I make for the woeid, they don't seem to be applied to the applet and it still gives me information about Innsbruk. It's a real shame because I really like that applet and despite this problem I still keep it on my panel in hopes of one day resolving this.
Can anyone help me?

i have installed it myself through the «othert applet» option of the add/remove applet. it opens this website http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets
i have downloaded and installed the weather applet from here. and it works well.

May be you should delete the applet and uninstall through synaptic and install again this way? it is probably a package missing, but which one…

Otherwise, you may also check in the dconf-editor org-»cinnamon-»applet you may change the conf here.

Could you please explain how you installed the applet. I have downloaded the zip file and extracted it to my desktop but cannot work out how to install it.

@FDF Okay I think I have messed this up really badly.
I looked through synaptic for the package of the applet and whenever I type "weather" and "cinnamon" nothing shows up. When I look up "weather" other weather applets show up, for MATE Desktop and Gnome and also some lib packages which are indicated to be installed. When I look up "cinnamon" all the other applets I show up except for the weather applet. So it seems like I had not installed the weather applet from synaptic after all facepalm). I know I installed it from the site but then deleted the files and was convinced that I uninstalled it, but that's not the case... its real confusing.

I have also come to realize that to uninstall the applet I was supposed to run the uninstall.sh file in the directory, I had however looked for the weather@mockturtl directory and delete it, as that's how you normally uninstall the applets. I therefore think I have really messed the applet up, I've tried to look up it's components but only know of the "cinnamon-weather-settings" launcher and the directory I mentioned beforehand. I therefore cannot properly delete the applet, I've even tried with the "uninstall.sh" in slight hope that it might just work a miracle, it did work to some extent, but the applet still remains in the list although it fails to load details. I ended up just trying to install the applet again in hopes that with use of the "cleanup.sh" and "install.sh" the broken applet may be overwritten by the new one or at least there may be a duplicate that would work perfectly. However, there is still one weather applet in the list and it works perfectly well if only I stay in Innsbruk :(

I think the problem is that the "cinnamon-weather-settings" component of the applet is missing which is why the applet fails to access it, I also can not open it through terminal but if I type "whereis cinnamon-weather-settings" it points me to the file "/usr/local/bin/cinnamon-weather-settings" which is a shortcut file pointing to "/root/.local/share/cinnamon/applet..." A directory I had previously deleted in an attempt to uninstall the applet. I really have messed this one up now, I'm not sure what to do...

@Fornhamfred To install the applet, you need to run the "install.sh" file (preferably "run in terminal so you can see what it's doing" otherwise you can just run it.) So assuming you had no earlier version of the applet you just double click the "install.sh" file and it will ask you to either "run it in terminal" or just "run" it or "display" the source code. You can then just choose to run it in terminal or just run it. I would advise you however to check these instructions with other more experienced users than me since I'm having problems and may have missed something out. :)

Good luck!!

Edit Just an update, I have found the "/root/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/weather@mockturtl/cinnamon-weather-settings" file. When I launch it from its location it loads and runs fine. Its settings however are not in sync with the applet, and any changes I make are not applied to the applet. I therefore think that the applet is pointed to the wrong location for the "cinnamon-weather-settings", its probably pointed to the shortcut file which doesn't launch, so I'm going to try and copy the working file to "/usr/local/bin/cinnamon-weather-settings" and overwrite the shortcut. I'll give feedback on what happens...

It's very easy to install though, just double click the install.sh

Why would it be in synaptic in the first place? It's not a package in a repo, it's something you download from a website.
Thank you for this thread. That’s all I can say. You most definitely have made this forum into something special. You clearly know what you are doing, you’ve covered so many bases. Thanks!

I thought it was in synaptic since most of the applets that were on the website were showed up on synaptic. It's a ppa: I came across that can be added for easy access to the applets, themes and extensions : http://www.webupd8.org/2012/04/cinnamon ... sions.html

I've managed to solve the problem somehow. I think what had happened is that I had initially installed the applet incorrectly, or screwed up somewhere during the install and so the "cinnamon-weather-settings" got misplaced and the actual applet got pointed to the shortcut "cinnamon-weather-settings" in the directory "/usr/local/bin/cinnamon-weather-settings" which pointed to "root/home/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/weather@mockturtl/cinnamon-weather-settings". But then I had deleted this root cinnamon directory (while I was meddling around with the applets trying to keep them in the same location "/usr/share/cinnamon/applets/" where all my other applets are). therefore the link the shortcut file was pointing to got broken and the applet couldn't launch the settings. So now after I installed the applet again, I copied the original file "root/home/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/weather@mockturtl/cinnamon-weather-settings" to "/usr/local/bin/cinnamon-weather-settings" replacing the shortcut file that was there. Now the applet seems to be working fine, I now can open settings from applet and from terminal, and any changes I make in the settings are applied to the applet :)

Thanks for the suggestions and assistance everyone. my weather applet now works great!! Now how do I mark this thread as solved? -_-;

Cannot get mine to install. Running install.sh puts an unidentifiable icon on the panel which does nothing.

It's very easy to install though, just double click the install.sh

bimsebasse,

I - like others - have download the .zip, but still can not figure out how to install Weather. The readme file is empty.

TIA in advance for your response.

Have you tried opening README.md with gedit?

This is the output I get:

cinnamon-weather uses [Semantic Versioning](http://semver.org/). For the current version number, see `metadata.json`.

Hi All,

I got it going. After I downloaded the applet I extracted it and simply clicked the install.sh. I had to re-boot my system to get it installed to my taskbar. I then clicked it to change the temperature to my location versus Innsbruck. This is one great weather app!
