Can't get out of fallback mode

Postby michaelg14 on Wed Apr 18, 2012 1:28 pm

I have done a fresh install of LMDE 201109 with all the updates. I have managed to get nvidia 295 graphics driver installed. Still I am stuck in fallback mode. My login choices are Gnome, gnome(something I can't remember) and System Default. everything sends me to fallback. One thing that might be relevant when the system is first starting the video flashes several times in different colors.

How do I get to Gnome 3?

Hi

You say that you have updated fully, if you have updated with Pack 4 you will have gnome 3 already installed by default. At login the gnome choice is Gnome 3. If I were you I would download the new iso and re-install. If you backup your home partition you can always restore it after the install.

Does the new iso have Gnome 3 or is it just Cinnamon and Mate?

I have done a fresh install of LMDE 201109 with all the updates.
how stock is this fresh install? have you installed and activated compiz?

because all the rest looks strange, as mank_in says the driver is installed and direct rendering is active, your graphic card is more than capable to run gnome-shell.

try (after check that compiz thingy) reinstall the shell
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-shell

I am back with a completely new installation. I used the 201109 iso when it finished I set the software repositories to

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

Did 800 MB worth of updates then loaded my graphics driver with

apt install nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx build-essential nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig
sudo nvidia-xconfig
sudo echo blacklist nouveau > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf
apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau libdrm-nouveau1a

In a root terminal. and not one thing changed. I still don't have Gnome three and I am stuck in fallback mode.

EDIT: I do have Gnome 3, I am just stuck in fallback mode.

that is a weird one
- your card is powerful enough to run the shell (every google search shows that, even with hits from here, the mint forum)
- the driver is installed and direct rendering available.
dunno :?:
what is the full output of
Code: Select all
inxi -Fc 0

and in the fallback mode if you do
Code: Select all
gnome-shell --replace
what happens (and what msg you get in the terminal?)

The output of both commands is below. When I run the shell replace command I end up in Gnome Shell until I close the terminal then my system crashes with no desktop and everything frozen. Sorry it has taken a while to get this information.

ID:/home size: 99G used: 81G (82%) fs: ext4

are you installing over an existing home?
that is not a stock install, not with 81gb used and not with all those extensions erroring in the output.

Yes, I have a separate home partition that is shared with Mint 12 Lisa. I have had the same home partition for several years and several versions of Linux.

yeahh, convenient but not advisable (you shpuld know the issues that can arise from the conf files conflits, specially as in here with 2 distros soo different as lisa and lmde)

as a test try to create a dummy-user and try again.

Yes you are probably right. They worked OK before Gnome 3 came along, maybe I need to delete everything and start over. Thanks for your help.

Would it not still be adviseable to use the new ISO not the old one?

Yes, but I seem to be in the minority that likes the Gnome 3 desktop and the new one isn't out yet. I did download the new Mate/Cinamon iso and loaded it. It works fine but I did re-do my home partition. I haven't tried 201109 again.
