trouble booting the newest and previous version

Postby meeri_fan on Tue Apr 17, 2012 4:41 am

Hi!
I am a noob in linux and now I have trouble.
I have a thinkpad t420. I am not an expert of computer, so I can't tell you more about my laptop. I know it is quite new. sorry....
Here comes my problem. the newest version of linux mint (3.0.0.16) doesn't work. if I boot linux os it needs a lot of time to react. so first of all there is a black desktop and then it says something and it stocks at 'checking battery status'. after that i have to reboot.
I tryed to boot the previous version(3.0.0.12), but I had trouble with it as well. Before I updated to the newest linux version, I had the same problem with the previous version. But now nothing is happening if I boot the previous version. only a black desktop.
I know that the source of the newest linux version was level 3. maybe that helps.
so please help me, because windows is really annoying -.-
thanks!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hi meeri fan, can you check the descriptions you give. You see Mint versions have simple numbers, the current version is Mint 12, also known as Lisa. The previous version was Mint 11 aka Katya. So what is Mint 3.0.0.16 and 3.0.0.12? I wondered if you were referring to the kernel, but current version is 3.3.2.

Hey!
Thanks for your reply.
I use linux mint 12. and i don't know if this is the kernel number.
but when I can choose which os I want to boot it says: Linux Mint 12 64-bit, 3.0.0-16-generic and the previous version: Linux Mint 12 64-bit, 3.0.0-12-gerneric.

Oh, silly me, I didn't realise the kernel version numbers were like that. I've not used a thinkpad so can't give you a definitive answer; however I think thinkpads are set up with a UEFI boot, so you'll need to check how to install in that circumstance. Never done that myself either, so can't help, but hopefully that'll point you in the right direction. regards

I have to say, that linux mint 12 worked before. but after the newest kernel it doesn't work anymore.

Hi,
Can't I go back to the latest version what worked fine?
that would seem to be the best answer. I don't know which kernel was originally supplied with Lisa, but you'll be able to get it from the repository with Synaptic. Then update grub so you can boot from it. regards
