Menu shortcut?

Postby Toomler on Thu Apr 19, 2012 5:06 pm

I've been using cinnamon for a while now, and this one thing bugs me. I have to use the mouse to open the Menu, because i can't figure out which keyboard shortcut opens it, and i can't find anywhere to configure a keyboard shortcut for it. I would expect the "Windows"/"Super" button to do this, given that the Win+D shortcut takes me to the desktop (as in Windows), but it doesn't. Is it supposed to? If so, what may be broken? If not, how can i configure a short cut for it? Any help in this is highly appreciated because this really freaks me out when i want to start some app quickly without reaching for the mouse.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Yes, pressing the Windows/Super key should pop open the Cinnamon menu. Did you change any settings, to be able to use the Windows/Super key for other shortcuts? That might be conflicting.

I think i figured out why it isn't working, but i still don't know how to fix it. My keyboard only has a right windows key (here's a picture of it: http://images.pricerunner.com/product/i ... yboard.jpg). I plugged in another keyboard with a left windows key, and it will correctly bring up the menu when using the left windows key (but not the right). Using xev, this is what i get:

KeyRelease event, serial 32, synthetic NO, window 0x3c00001,
root 0xbc, subw 0x0, time 844294223, (670,494), root:(672,581),
state 0x50, keycode 134 (keysym 0xffec, Super_R), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

With the alternative keyboard, using the left windows key, i get this (and the Menu opens up):

KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x3c00001,
root 0xbc, subw 0x0, time 842865128, (316,-118), root:(317,400),
state 0x50, keycode 133 (keysym 0xffeb, Super_L), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

So it seems there's a difference between the left and the right windows keys.

I looked in the keyboard shortcuts i could only find "Hide all normal windows" which was mapped to "Mod4+D", which turns out to be the right windows button + D as expected. But there's no where to set the shortcut for opening the menu.

Is this a bug in Cinnamon (or some other component), or isn't the right windows key supposed to work the same as the left? Is there any way to change it (using some hidden config file or something)?

Opening the menu is set to Super_L, so if your keyboard only has Super_R--it won't open the menu with that. Not exactly sure how to do this, but I think you should be able to change the Cinnamon configuration for this or you could remap Super_R to Super_L with xmodmap.

I tried xmodmap, but not sure exactly which command to use. I couldn't get that to work, but i may be doing that wrong. Do you know where can i find the cinnamon configuration?

In any case, i think it is a bug that only the left Windows key opens the Menu (even if you have a left Windows key), so i filed a ticket on github, and hope this may be fixed in the future.

EDIT: github ticket: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/630
