Linux Wont Boot Up- Blue Screen Of Death

Postby Spudster on Mon Apr 16, 2012 9:31 pm

I have been trying to boot up linux on my pc with a bottable usb and also from a hard disk it does not matter what linux i try to install whether its Puppy Linux or ubuntu When i boot up in any mode, the screen goes dim for 1 secound then black like the laptop is turned off???

I didnt pay for a locked up frozen hunk of junk! I want it to support other operating systems (OS) like Linux :?

Ive done some google research and what i can find is toshiba basically doesent support linux but could the black screen be releated to something else, others have successfully booted linux with toshiba I got the laptop a few months ago.

And when i tried to boot into windows after trying to get linux to boot after a few hours doing this, I get a blue screen of death for a split secound then the pc turned of, I have now formated the partion to reinstall windows

again, But it seems like the disk has crashed Getting a error message saying "Error TRY: Null or Invaild" Might try to reinstall windows and see what happends (theres not ticking sound and the disk sounds like its processing normally)
Whats the probablem??
Thanks,
Spudster

Laptop Model: L750D Laptop Satelite Series.

PS: Everything was going perfectly fine before i tried ran my bootable linux..

But linux is a handy little system and i do need it as toshiba shouldnt be so locked up hoping to solve these issues anyhow.

it seems definitely strange. even if the hard disk is broken, it shouldn't avoid the start of Linux on USB.
And the reinstall should have solved any partition issue…

Have you test only, or try to install linux? on which partition…

By the way I read that some new kind of BIOS would install a "no change" feature to avoid the possibility of installing a new OS (or even to change the main hard disk easily) but I don't think it is already implemented…

I managed to get the hard disk working again by reinstalling windows and deleting the partions...

But it seems strange that i get a black screen when i go and try to start linux. im using the most recent bios of Toshiba and the laptop is only a few years old..

Looks like a GRUB issue, but I can't help you on that…

The boot sector was probably corrupted.

Moved here by moderator. Reason: not specifically Linux Mint.

Black screen after boot is quite common with discrete graphics cards, like those from Nvidia and AMD (due to still poor Linux support from those manufacturers). You have to go through some hoops to get it booting successfully the first time, then install the proper graphics card driver or update your software packages, and then it should be fine.

As Toshiba is one of the manufacturers that has about a million different sub-models of each model laptop (gee, let me pick and choose my own components already if you want to carry that many different models ), can you specify your laptop's hardware or include the sub-model number? Like Toshiba Satellite L750D-BT5N22.

To be clear, when you state that you have tried Linux from your hard disk--does that mean you were able to install it successfully?

If you want to try Linux Mint 12 (downloads here: http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php; if you have a slower CPU I'd go for the LXDE version perhaps, as that is somewhat more lightweight), you should get a countdown timer during the booting from the USB. Press a key during the countdown, then in the menu that follows highlight the second option (compatibility mode) with the arrow keys and press the Tab key to edit the boot parameters. Before the final double-dash (--) on that line, insert "nomodeset acpi=off" (without the quotes). See if this allows you to boot successfully. If so, go ahead and install it. After installation, and rebooting, you should get a GRUB boot menu (if not, hold shift during boot), and then press the 'e' key to edit the boot parameters. Now scroll down to the line starting with 'linux' and again add "nomodeset acpi=off" (without the quotes) to that line and continue the boot. Next step depends on what graphics card you have.

Other Linux distros should work similarly and offer you the same chance to edit your boot parameters to forcefully boot with some options to get the graphics card to work until the proper driver can be installed.

Thanks for your help.

I have tried this but still didnt seem to work, I guess it might be the graphics card thats not supporting linux.

I forgot to mention that i can boot up linux and get to the menu but when i click on Start Linux or Try in compatible mode it tries to boot up for about a few secounds/1 minute then the screen will go dark like no power is getting threw or like its turned off.

I will try replacing the graphics card and see if it will work then, get back in this thread in a few days.

Untill then hope yous can give other suggestions/help might not be the graphics card.

Laptop Model: L750D

PART NO: PSK36A-00U008

And heres a picture on what the laptop looks like (its a rough example off google)

I can't find any specs online for the PSK36A-00U008 model. If you need any further assistance, can you please share the hardware details (which CPU, how much memory, what graphics cards, etc.). Usually you can either find this in the BIOS or perhaps Windows has a tool for this.

Usually with laptops, anything except for harddisk, DVD and memory can not be replaced. Probably the forum members can help you solve it, but we do need the laptop's list of devices, especially in this case which graphics cards/chips it has. And of course, which Linux distro/version are you now trying it out with?

Sorry, I had looked before but that link doesn't show any system specifications. Also not in the user manual. The user manual does say that a is tool installed you can use: Start > All Programs > TOSHIBA > Utilities > PC Diagnostic Tool

You will have to gather the system specifications yourself somehow, perhaps with above tool. You can thank Toshiba for this.
