Greetings from Michigan

Postby Cadeus on Sat Apr 21, 2012 3:59 pm

I would have introduced myself earlier, but the first account I tried to make wouldn't ever send the verification information and the forums said to contact an administrator if I didn't get access  - would have been nice if it said how or where to find the appropriate people~

Anyways, I've been looking at giving Linux a shot and finally beat my laptop up to the point where I literally couldn't run anything but Internet Explorer 8 (old XP laptop - not even notepad seemed to be able to run, so lot's of fun there).

Anyways, I have it installed and for the moment the internet seems to be working on it so i gave creating another account a shot and here I am.

I am a college student, graduating from my current college with five degrees ranging a gamut of topics from digital art, to programing to business and am going to start at a new university in the fall where I plan to focus on Computer Science as my major. I learned that they use linux there and figured that since I planned on eventually taking a look around at it that I might as well do so now so I can start off there at a crawl instead of a coffin.

It was rather interesting to see that I ended up writing more code to install opera so I didn't have to deal with a webkit browser or bloody firefox than I did in my C# programming class and even more to get my wireless card to work, but all seems to be good now and I'll get back around to saying hi.

Hi! :D

Hi Cadeus, welcome to the Linux Mint forums :D Sorry to hear you had some issues, but good to read you have resolved them. As for contacting the administrators, you can now accesss "The team" link at the bottom of the page. For user not logged in this is not allowed, but the Project > Contact Us link on the main website has the email addresses should you need assistance when unable to login to the forums.

Be sure also to check out the Community website (ideas, tutorials, and hardware and software reviews), and the Cinnamon Spices website for adding themes, applets and extensions to Cinnamon (and check out the Cinnamon Extras package, which will install a lot of these for your automatically). If you haven't installed Cinnamon, see here the most recent update for a teaser.

You can also chat in real-time with other Linux Mint users. In the Mint Menu, in the Internet section, start the application XChat IRC. You will automatically get connected to #linuxmint-chat for general chat and #linuxmint-help for support with other Linux Mint users.

Thanks for the welcomes, this whole adventure looks to be shaping up to be a fairly easy transition and I am starting to be slightly afraid I might decide to shift my desktop over as well. I'm just ready to risk all the commercial software I have accumulated since I prefer the interfaces over the free versions of what I have seen. Still, looking at the speed boost my poor old laptop has gotten, I can only imagine how my beastly desktop would fair.

lol, that makes sense to give users who can't log in a message to contact administrators when the link on the page to do so only works when logged in. I'm glad the contact info is somewhere though, even though I would have never thought to look in the project dropdown for it. XD

I'll have to take a look at this cinnamon thing then since you make it come off as sounding like it is nice/useful and I've heard of it before.
