Wireless connection keeps resetting router

Postby robgould39@yahoo.com on Mon Apr 23, 2012 8:47 pm

Hello.

I installed linux MInt 12 on my laptop. While using the live cd the laptop connected fine and had no issues. After install the wireless connection connected but then kept resetting my router. When this happened it would kill the connection to all other devices connected to the router. The laptop would then connect and within seconds reset the router and drop again.

I did some searching and decided to do a factory reset on my router. I did no configuring to it at all after the reset and left it completely unsecured and with all default settings. The symptoms persisted.

Then I thought maybe I had something wrong with the system so I downloaded Mint again, but this time the KDE version. Again with the live CD everything worked perfect. Did the install and same symptoms re-occured.

I really have no idea what to do next. ON the live CD the connection is steady and works fine. Install the system and then all of the sudden Mint start connecting, resetting router, all devices drop, then laptop reconnects automatically for a few seconds and then does the same over and over again.

It is hard to keep it on to do much troubleshooting as it is a very big issue to other users connected to the router.

Any suggestions?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

hmm dlink--- g wireless..
not possible to use third party firmware such as dd wrt
http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

seriously you should consider some other good and may be cheap wireless router.
Asus RT N12, may be

Here is what I think, a wireless router should not be reset because of any client , even the clients misbehave! unless its client happened to be the admin and he log in to admin page and reset the router.

One thing you could try:
just use wired LAN, and see if such behaviour persists.

The router is old, sure enough, but I don't think it is the issue.

I have Mint 12 set up to dual boot on another laptop (Toshiba Satellite) and it connects and works perfectly.

The laptop in question connects flawlessly from the live CD. It is only after installing Mint to the hard drive that the problem arises.

I could just start swapping hardware and drivers, but that seems to not be the logical approach to me.

If it connects flawlessly from the live CD then it stands to reason that it should also be able to perform after installed.

I would rather take the time and try to identify the root issue.

If anyone has any other thoughts or suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

After more searching here and on google, it seemed as though the issue could be traced back to Ubuntu.

To test, I installed lmde on the same laptop. Wireless works perfectly after install with all the same hardware.
