Backlight increases to maximum after reboot

Postby David Sarif on Sun Apr 22, 2012 11:17 pm

Hello everyone,

Just got Linux Mint and I'm having a tiny issue. Everytime I reboot my laptop, the screen's backlight resets to maximum brightness. How do I fix this? I tried the solution in section 1m on some article on this forum (when i find the link i'll post it) and it did not work.

Thanks in advance,

David Sarif

I guess you're using Linux Mint 12 with Gnome-shell/MGSE or Cinnamon desktop (next time read this before asking for help, more specifically item [5]).

Adjust your backlight to a value you feel comfortable with, then open a terminal and execute the following command:
Code: Select all
pkexec /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --get-brightness

Copy the output and paste it here at the forum.

Hey, thanks for answering. Sorry for responding so late, i've been a bit busy.

I lowered the brightness to the desired level and entered the command like you instructed and the output was simply 0 (zero).
What is the next step?

Do exactly the same but with your backlight at its maximum, then post the results here at the forum.

Perfect.
Then you can create a startup script to dim your backlight:

Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh
#change brightness setting on startup or resume
pkexec /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --set-brightness 1

Save it to your personal folder with the name .dimbacklight.sh, give it executable privileges and then execute this command:

Code: Select all
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.input-devices hotplug-command "/home/YOUR_USERNAME_HERE/.dimbacklight.sh"

I worked! Thanks a bunch. The stange thing is I tried thie method before (I found it on one of the threads here) and it did not work. Maybe I did something wrong. I have one more question before I let you go. Is this issue common on all Linux distros? Before switching to Linux Mint I had Ubuntu 11.10 and it had the same issue.

It seems to be a bug in Gnome3 in general (Unity, Gnome-shell, Gnome-fallback, Cinnamon).
