Wireless connection

Postby animaguy on Mon Apr 23, 2012 12:55 am

Several weeks ago I downloaded Linuxmint 12 w/KDE. It was with a small throw away laptop that I wanted to try and save. The laptop wireless didnt have a history of a working wifi w/WinXP so it was assumed that there was something wrong with the wifi hardware in the computer.

I had a break in learning linux but I just recently started back up. I noticed the internet icon on the bottom right of the task bar. I noticed the wireless wasnt check marked. I checked it and found a wifi connection to a local business next door that I successfully connected to with another laptop running Win7.

I opened the firefox browser but it wont connect.

Can anyone tell me how to further troubleshoot?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

you can start by entering these commands on terminal.

- mintwifi = this will display all your network connections.
- lspci -v = displays the hardware in your computer
- lsmod = display the modules loaded into your computer

good luck!

I have run those three commands in the terminal. And I am not sure what I am looking for. My understanding is I wiped clean the previous WinXP so there should be no drivers.

With those commands, what should I be looking for and are there any links that I can go to and study the components of wifi for linuxmint?

I noticed on another thread that a person was asked to run similar commands and then copy and pasted the output on their thread.

I will do the same asap. I am at work now but this afternoon Pacific Standard Time I will do so.

Where can you download wifi drivers for Linux Mint 12 and what commands in the terminal do you need to run in order to find information about which wifi drivers to downlaod?

I found a website that offers help for finding wifi drivers on a linux os:

-----

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-find ... r-chipset/

-----

Linux: Find Wireless Driver Chipset Information

by VIVEK GITE on JULY 16, 2010 · 3 COMMENTS

How do I find out Wireless driver chipset information under Linux? How do I get wireless card chipeset information without opening my systems?

----

The simplest command to get this information is to use the lspci command:

lspci lspci | less lspci | grep -i intel lspci | grep -i wireless

Sample outputs:

0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection

Note down 0c:00.0 and enter the following command:

lspci -vv -s 0c:00.0

Sample outputs:

0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 1121 Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- Dis Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- SERR-Kernel driver in use: iwlagn Kernel modules: iwlagn

To get driver information type:

modinfo iwlagn

Sample outputs:

Your hardware seem to be recognized just fine and the driver is loaded.
Mintifi gave you "wlan0"
Lsmod gave you bunch of lines with iwl3945 on them

You might have to play around with your router settings. Is your router a wireless N? I have a laptop with G adapter and N router. It used to not work as well, forgot what I did but I changed something and been working since then.

Here is the problem. I don't have a router. I live across the street from a coffee shop that has wifi. I can pick up the router using the network manager at the bottom corner when I scan but firefox doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

I wrote on another thread about this issue.

I just want to let anyone reading this thread know that unless someone can come up with a solution to this bug I have decided on a new plan to address this issue.

I am going to start reinstalling other versions of Linux Mint and test the issue of wifi and record my findings on this thread.

I will stay with Linux Mint until I exhaust all options.

I will use the isos provided on the community website to preserve the integrity of my experiment.

I will also start with the Lisa versions.

I will try and be as methodical as I can about how I download and install each version.

And I will pay close attention to the desktop versions to see if I can eliminate the possibility that the desktop is the issue.

I copy and pasted a list of all the LM isos on the community.linuxmint/iso webpage.

I eliminated:
Rejected
Approved for RC release
92.73% tested
Amd64 (because my computer only has 1gb ram)

I learned that the community.linuxmint/iso page doesn't have links for iso downloads. If they do have links I couldn't find them.

I also narrowed my search for isos.

Lisa and Debian

Debian
- 32 bit Xfce 201204
- 32 bit Cinnamon 201204

Lisa
- 32 bit LXDE
- 32 bit KDE
- 32 bit Gnome
- 32 bit Gnome + MATE

I based my choices on linuxmint.com/oldreleases.php

I downloaded all the above iso torrents.

I am currently using Bit Torrent to download the isos.

This will take sometime.

The Xfce Debian iso torrent download is complete.

The Debian Cinnamon is currently downloading.

I added torrent Lisa LXDE.

It seems logical to me to start with Debian because of the recent release.

If I run out of time downloading Lisa I may skip what I don't complete and start installing Debian and test the wifi connection.

At this time it seems logical to start with Xfce.

I made a newbie observation that the lisa isos are smaller in MBs than the Debian versions.

I added the torrents to the Gnome and Gnome + MATE isos.

This may corrupt the other isos so it is a risk.

Note: I already have the Lisa KDE iso burnt on a disk.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.
